Good Morning Everyone,
I have a question about my Annie. She was diagnosed a week ago today. She was put on Lantus 1 unit once a day. This morning my husband took her blood glucose ready and it was 366, he accidentally gave her 1 1/2 units instead of the 1 unit is that okay?? She has been on lantus for only 1 week. We have only be testing her for three days :
Day 1 305
Day 2 308
Day 3 366
She seems to be doing just fine we are just really nervous and so new at this. Thank you
Thank you for all your help

Sounds like this would be a good day to perform a curve--testing Annie's BG level every 2 hours to see how she is doing. That way, you will know whether the 1.5U was too much and could put her in danger. If you start seeing numbers under 100, you especially should check back in and let us know what they are, just so we can get you prepared for hypo alert.

Also, just to make sure folks watch for you today, I am going to put a 911 on your post. Please repost on this thread as the day progresses and you get numbers.

I would love to do every two hours but it has been already 5 hours since the shot was give to her this morning, I gave her some hard food treats after her shot . My husband is going right now to test her blood glucose it is 223. So should we start now every 2 hours??? So it was 366 and now it's 223 is this how I would type it AMPS +5 223???

Definitely do a curve today, at least every 2 hours, starting now, although you might want to get a +6, too. Also, I would suggest you cross post on the lantus forum. There are some wonderful people on that site with a wealth of information regarding dosage. Do you have high carb canned food in the home and karo syrup? If your kitty's numbers start going too low (under 50), you may need to feed a little high carb food (Fancy Feast gravy lovers is a good hc canned food) and then re-test in 15 minutes. I am not an expert because my cat Simon was only recently diagnosed in November, but with the help and support of everyone on this site, Simon is doing so well. Any other questions you have about Lantus, go ahead and post on that forum. I hope everything goes well for you today.

Yes, you are posting it right.

You write

AMPS 366

+5 223

PMPS (?)

I think you are safe, 223 after 5 hours is still high, so the extra half unit haven't put her into jeopardy. It is when you end up at 54.

Congrats on your hometesting!

I've bold marked the parts you should see.

Only 1 Unit PER DAY on numbers high as 300+, is actually too little insulin. You should try 1 Unit twice a day, with 12 hours apart, 1 U in the morning and 1 U in the evening after 12 hours.

Test her at 12 hr pm tonight and you will see that you still get a high number.

We are giving her the 1 unit because that is what the vet told us to due last Sat when we picked her up. We take her back to the vet this coming Friday to due a curve, should we just go ahead and test her at the +12 and then post her numbers here on the board, and if they are high give her another 1 unit???? I am so scared and nervous.
Thank you everyone for helping us,
Judy and Annie

Yes go ahead and test her at + 12 and post her number here. Then we will guide you.

Don't be nervous and scared. I was too when new but just take a deep breath and try convince yourself that everything is aaalright. It is working fantastic for you so far, so you can do this. We have faith in you. Take your time. Okay? Good. Deal! ;-)

I was so scared, too. I didn't know what to do! I promise you that it gets much easier.

Try to do your own curve at home. Lantus is usually given twice a day, 12 hours apart.

Here is the Lantus board. You should introduce yourself there and everyone will be so helpful I promise!

Most of us don't have our cats do curves at the vet's office because often cats get very stressed at the vets which inflates their numbers and it's not a true reading.

Unfortunately many vets don't have a lot of experience with feline diabetes. The people here live, breathe and eat feline diabetes!!!

Good luck to you!!

Yes, as I suggested yesterday or the day before, if at 12 hours post shot you get the same number that you had (or close) at the last shot then you know the insulin isn't lasting longer than 12 hours and that you need to shoot twice a day. you aren't going to see much improvement at all if you only shoot once a day.

please, please, I know this is overwhelming but you have to read the info at the lantus group about how lantus needs time to build up to see an effect. shooting once a day is almost useless.

Hi Judy & Annie,
I saw your post on the Lantus forum and am following Sienne's advice to answer you here in Health so that you don't have to look in two places today. I agree with the consensus that you should test Annie every 2 hours or so until you are sure that she hasn't dropped into the 50s or below. It isn't likely, but you never know!! Better safe than sorry. Lantus dosing is almost always done twice a day (every 12 hours). When you have time (between tests!), go back to the Lantus forum and read the "Sticky" (informational post) "New To The Group" near the top of the Lantus forum. This will give you links to all of the important things to know about Lantus as well as all sorts of information about how to care for a diabetic cat.
You have come to the right place to help Annie. Welcome to the FDMB!

Okay here is the update on my Annie. We just tested her blood glucose level here is how the day went:

366 AMPS
223 +5
233 +6
342 +12

So today we my mistake gave her 1 1/2 units of Lantus. The vet told us to give her 1 unit her day we have an appt. this coming Sat. for a curve. So should we give her 1/2 unit tonight or wait until the morning to she where she is at???
Thank you for any advice
Judy and Annie

Hi Judy

How are you feeling?

That is Excellent work! The testing you have done, this is what we do when we hometest.

Numbers in the 200s and 300s are still very high. You want to see numbers in the 100s to start with. You will be on your way there.

Yes, I think you can give her ½ Unit now in the evening. If you are up, you can re-test her at +2 or +3 again after the evening shot (PMPS)

In the morning for the AMPS shot, you test her first again, and keep posting her numbers here.

I am in Sweden, and it is 2.30am in the night, so I myself have to go to bed now, I stayed up for this. And don't worry. Everything is going to be aaalright, and you have done fantastic so far. Hugs.

Hi Ann,
Thank you for staying up to see Annie's numbers. You are awesome!!!!!I am feeling alittle better knowing that there are such wonderful, kind, and very helpful people on this board. I am feeding Annie some wellness wet food right now and my husband will be giving her 1/2 unit of lantus after she eats, we will then check her number at +2 an +4 to she where she is at. I guess I feel better going slow. My husband and I feel bad that we have to poke her so much, but we are trying to help her. One day next week when the two of us are off from work we want to try to do a curve the whole day before we take her into the vet again. Our project for tomorrow is working on the spreadsheet........
I will post her numbers tomorrow,
Hugs
Judy and Annie

You're doing great, Judy! I know it seems like you're hurting them when you're pricking them, but just remember that you are helping your kitty. A well regulated kitty is a much happier kitty! You guys are doing a fantastic job! Starting slow is always a great approach!!
