I just picked up my cat's insulin. The vet said to go on GoodRX.com because you can get it cheaper, and I did. The site said it was going to be $56 at Walgreens. So I go to Walgreens and they tell me it's $309 and the GoodRX coupon took it down from $390.

I paid it, because my cat needs his medicine, but what's the deal here? Do they charge more because they know it's for a cat or something? Has anyone else experienced this?

It's the same item.

to Chewy.com/scripts or Vet diet@chewy.com if you're getting the Royal Canin good luck they have all the insulin brands

Hi. We are new to posting and 4 months into my cat’s diagnoses and treatments. I use goodrx for Glargine pens at Walgreens and buy the single vial pens (3 ml) for $71. I have seen them for less. Maybe the pens will be cheaper for you overall and you may find the pen easier to use. My cat only gets 2 units twice a day so one pen lasts over a month. Keep in mind that pharmacies will charge different prices and it can vary quite a bit. It pays to shop around once you get into the routine. Good luck.

Did you try Costco pharmacy? That’s ridiculously expensive. Was good rx giving you the vial or the pen price? Even a RideAid with not discount a pen it’s only about $100. You need to always call first to make sure about the price. I’d also look into ordering from Canada. It’s about $40-50 a pen

I see some members will call CVS, Rite Aid, Costco, Walgreen's, to get the price for 5 pens

. I paid $175 for a box of 5 pens at Walmart pharmacy, but GoodRX coupon says you can get it for around $90 if you have a Rite Aid pharmacy near you.

Just call around for the best price

Allie was using the Lantus and I just switched to the generic and using the GoodRX I got 5 pens for $81.30 at Walgreens. GoodRX has a 1-800 number to assist you in using their services to get your pets prescriptions filled if the pharmacy gives you any issues.

I think I found it for you

When you checked the price, did you make sure to indicate where you live? Prices may vary depending on your location. I would call GoodRx like Diane suggested. I'd also make sure you have the phone # for the pharmacy you went to handy in case the GoodRx customer service folks ask for it.

Seconding what JL is saying here. I just paid $56 at Walgreens this past Tuesday with GoodRx. Maybe they didn't give you generic.

It was Lantus brand. I guess that explains it.

For next time, do I need to have the vet make out a prescription for generic insulin or can I request generic at the pharmacy?

You should be able to request it, typically you can do that for any human prescription, so I wouldn't think there would be an issue with a pet prescription. It's possible that Walgreens was out of the generic. I tried to get the generic five pens, but they didn't have them, so I had to get the vile.

My vet wrote the script for "insulin glargine", it might be worth it to have them rewrite it that way for you so there's no issue at the pharmacy.

I would get a pen not a vial. That vial you got will last you likely over a year. I don’t think it matters what it says on the prescription just like human meds. You just have to ask for generic. I’d do some price research now. In my experience, Walgreens has always been more expensive for everything. Walmart or Costco should give you the best prices. Ordering from Canada is also a great option, that’s what I did.

I got the 10ml vial for $56 at Walgreen's myself back in May when I started giving Glargine. I printed out the coupon from GoodRx's website & brought it into Walgreen's, no problems. Just to be safe, have your vet write out Insulin Glargine. Have never had a problem with GoodRx until this week when I tried to get my cat's Clindamycin antibiotic for around $10 at Walmart like it said on the GoodRx app and Walmart charged me around $15. So I called GoodRx and they called Walmart and after waiting a while, I was told Walmart was having problems processing the discount for that amount and I was in a rush as my cat was sick & needed it, so I paid for it (luckily wasn't too much, but every penny counts for me right now). But GoodRx said they would send my Rx to my local Walgreen's where it had the cheapest discount ($4.89) for when I needed my refill. I didn't know they had the authority to do that, but when I called Walgreens a day or so later to double check: they never received it. So Walgreen's had to call Walmart to get it. From now on, I'm having a backup plan with GoodRx (e.g. another retailer, another Rx discount card, etc.) bc you burn me once: I can't trust you. There's also SingleCare.com Rx discount card too that's as good as GoodRx & often better too. Just search online for more Rx discount cards. Btw, Walgreen's had told me that my 10ml vial would expire in a month, but the good folks here on felinediabetes.com told me it can often last as long as a year or so as long as you keep it refrigerated & don't drop/shake it and as long as it isn't cloudy, etc. looking (looks clear). They were right, it's 4 months later & still no problems with it. Good luck!

Usually that's the case, but oddly enough: with GoodRx, more often than not, the prescriptions I've gotten were listed as cheaper at Walgreens (& even CVS, Giant, Safeway, etc.) than Walmart. So Walmart being the cheapest retailer doesn't always apply in their case for some reason.

I'd call and ask to speak with the pharmacist. Let them know that you were expecting the generic/biosimilar and they dispensed the name brand. Tell them you want a refund. They may refuse but maybe not!

I already opened it and used some of it. I really hate dealing with it, so I'm just going to eat the loss and use it as a learning experience for next time. Most important thing is the cat has his meds.
