Need more info...
What was the dose, and what are some of the recent BG numbers you've seen? How long ago did you shoot?
Carl

He's 10. He has had diabetes for 1 year and 3 months. I have trouble with the monitor. Just go by what the vet says. He's suppose to get 3 mls in the am and 2 in the pm. Do them about 12 hours apart. He had his shot about 2hrs and 15 minutes ago! Thank you

Hi, is there any update on your cat? How is he doing? Have you tested his BG levels? Are you going to be around to monitor him later?

When you say you gave an extra 'ml' of insulin do you mean an extra 'unit'?

I have posted link to your question on the Lantus users' forums. So hopefully someone with knowledge of your insulin can better advise.

Thanks for the heads-up in LL-TR, Elizabeth.

Hi - I'm sorry, I don't have a name to address you with! Any update on BG?

I second Carl's request for more information, please. It's difficult for us to advise you when we know so little...

He is fine! I was just nervous. I gave him a little normal food and a couple of treats last night as they take more insulin to burn.

I accidentally gave my cat 1 extra ml of his insulin, Lantis. Is this a problem?

Please clarify --- Did you give one extra UNIT or one extra ML of insulin?

There is a big difference between a unit and a ml. One ml is one entire 100 unit (1 ml) insulin syringe. One unit is one tiny little mark on the insulin syringe barrel, assuming you are using a 30 unit insulin syringe.

One extra unit of insulin may not make much difference but one extra ML will most certainly cause a severe hypo which can mean death.

Insulin doses are commonly measure in units, especially for a diabetic cat.

Blindly giving insulin is very dangerous. You can inadvertantly send your cat into a hypo if the bg was in a normal range and you gave the usual amount of insulin anyways.

What meter did you previously use? Some meters work better than others for a cat. What is the difficult part of testing for you? Is it getting decent amount of blood? Getting the cat to hold still?

I really hope you mean 3 units of insulin and not 3 ml

Lantus does not work with different daily doses. You need to stick with one dose and give it consitently until a dose change is needed based on a curve. Some vets just don't know how Lantus works for cats. Have you read the Lantus info stickies? http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=9
