Insulin injection mishap

Hi guys,
My husband just tried to give Neo his injection and unfortunately most of it seemed to end up on the inside rather than subQ. I am planning on testing his levels in about an hour, but what should I do? Should I at some point give him another injection? Or is it just safer to skip the injection tonight, check again tomorrow morning and then give him his dosage of caninsulin, which is what I'm leaning toward? He also just had his dinner....

He is on 5U of caninsulin, last check (just before the shot) put him at 15.3mmol/L (275 mg/L).

Thank you!

on the inside, do you mean in the muscle instead of just under the skin?

This will just be absorbed a bit faster and the shot hurts a lot more.

No extra shot needed! It is not a good idea to give a second shot early even if you know some went outside (we call that a fur shot when the fur is wet and smells like medicine after the shot). There is no way to know for sure how much went in and how much missed -- so just make a note in the record book / spreadsheet when the shot is "iffy".

Just continue with the 12 hour schedule

"On the inside" as in it went into muscle? If yhat is what you mean do not panic about it. His body will still absorb it but most
likely at a different rate. Continue to monitor his bg and post here.

Whoops. Sorry. I obviously can't type when someone is talking to me. I meant most of it ended up in his fur rather than actually going under the skin - a fur shot. I will try to remember that.

Okay, thank you! I will make a note, monitor as normal and not freak out.

Thank you so much for the super speedy reply! You guys are amazing!

Dear Zubora, and, of course, you too, sweet Neo,

Fur shots happen! And, since you don't know how much got in vs how much your hand sighingly felt, no extra shot. You and Neo will just ride it out, okay?

Breathe. It beats freaking out. Trust me!

Okay, chocolate and grapes aged in oak help. We also have a lot ice cream aficionados here as well...

I'm a fan of bubble baths. Candles are a nice addition. An ashtray is pretty much mandatory.

No matter your choice, breathing is key. Trust me!

Welcome to dancing with a sugar cat! You won't regret it!

Love and encouraging hugs for you and yours,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

Thanks so much all! I just tested and he's back up to 18.6 / 335, but he's been way higher so I'm not stressing. I'll check once or twice more before bed and drag myself out extra early tomorrow so I can check again before I give him his next dose.

I'm just wondering - is it normal for him to be so ravenous? He is following me around so closely I keep nearly tripping on him, and if someone goes into the kitchen he goes crazy. He's had 456g of wet food today and he's looking at me like he could easily eat another 100g can if I gave it to him. And he's so tiny! I hope he doesn't still have any bugs in his belly. :(

until his bg's get regulated, he will be hungrier than normal. With Maui, she could eat 2 - 2 1/2 cans of fancy feast in one sitting. Once her bg's got under control she would eat 1/2 to 1 can per sitting.

So, yes, it's normal for him to be very hungry during this process and it's important to feed him as often and as much as he needs.

You may want to add water to the food - it will slow him down and also allow you to freeze it and serve later, so when you're sleeping and he comes to you hungry, if you put out the frozen food along with fresh food, it will be thawed by the time he is ready for it and allow you to sleep.

You can put the food in a plastic container, or plastic baggie and freeze. Some people even use ice cube trays. Whatever you have available is fine.

And for the amount of water to add - I typically add 1/3 - 1/2 can of water to each can of food.

What a brilliant idea! I was just sitting here worried, wondering what I should do for him tomorrow when I am at work and won't be able to feed him during the day. I have ordered a timed feeder, but that probably won't arrive until Tuesday. But I can easily freeze his wet food and just pop it out into his bowl to thaw during the day. Thank you so much for the idea!

Hi Maya, and, of course you too, sweet Neo,

Initially, you are basically feeding Neo's diabetes. Not Neo. That's why he's an ever present furry in the kitchen. Eventually, with insulin, you will be feeding Neo!

Feed Neo whatever he wants or his diabetes demands. Home test to know it's safe to shoot. Try not to have hiccups whilst typing. That would be me, not you.

Thank you for sharing your name with us. I, hiccup, like names. Oh crap, more hiccups...

Love and h------ugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, who taught me anything and everything is possible -- especially while hiccupping!
