If you can get your vet to write a prescription for the Lantus Solostar pen, the manufacturer of Lantus offers a Lantus savings card program that will work for anyone without insurance, even for a cat.

This will allow you to pay only $25 for the first 6 prescriptions for the Solostar pen.

Warnings
1. some pharmacies have refused to accept this but they should so be sure to talk to the manager.
2. you may need to call around to find a pharmacy that is willing to sell a single pen at a time.
3. I believe this is only valid in the US

Would very much appreciate the How to for getting the Lantus savings card for my kitty.

I just tried the lantus link, but it was rejected because the person has to be 18 or older.
Then, I called and tried to register and could not.

Did you put your kitty's name on the card or your name and your information?
If you used your name, then will the pharmacy allow it since the perscription is in the cat's name?
 
I'm pretty sure I put Michelangelo's name down, but either way, the pharmacy will have to call your vet to get their veterinary prescriptions number (or something along those lines) so the pharmacy will "know" it's for a cat. It shouldn't matter and the Lantus manufacturer (McKesson) doesn't care but you might run into the odd pharmacist or two who gives you a problem with it *cough*Rite Aide*cough*
 
There are plenty of human children diabetics. Their parents are their guardians. Same as for you being the guardian for your cat.

Also, don't let the pharmacy tell you this is only for people with insurance. The exact opposite is true. Since you do not have insurance for your cat, you should be able to use the savings card and get the full benefit.

I signed up for the Lantus savings card using my kitty's name, age over 18, and my info for the balance.
Went to Walmart with a printout of the card and perscription. The cash price for lantus solostar (5 cartridges, 3ml each) is $291. The savings card reduced my price to $191. While I was relieved to get the $100 discount dancing_cat , it would be wonderful to get the perscription for $25. I'm just not sure how to do that. dancing_cat
 
I believe a prescription is considered to be a single Lantus Solostar pen. The discount should have been $25 for each pen. So if there were 5 pens, you should have gotten $125 off. I'd go back and ask for an extra $25 off.

You have one more pen to apply that discount to. The savings card is good for 6 prescriptions, so 6 pens.
 
It does depend on the state and there may be additional taxes and surcharges that caused it to be $191, so check your receipt to make sure you got 5 pens for $25 each. If not, Deb is right and go back and ask for your extra $25 or extra pen (whichever they skimped you on).

My Walmart was great in that I purchased it full-price (I forgot my savings card) and they gave me the discount (in cash) when I brought back in my savings card within 30 days of original purchase. They also kept my card on file so when I just bought a new pen last week, the discount was automatically applied and I didn't even have to bring my card in again (I buy the pens individually).

Another question.... how long do you use a cartridge?
The insert says discard it after 28 days (of it being opened). Some people use it much longer, but that seems risky since it may not be obvious when the insulin is no longer effective.
 
28 day if it's unrefrigerated. If you store it properly and don't roll it, you should be able to use the pens to the last drop and the vial anywhere from 4 to 6 months. If you're home-testing, you'll usually see the lost potency reflected in higher BGs when the cat may have been stable at a dose for a while. You also might see cloudiness or particles floating around, which is another sign the insulin may not be good any longer.

In my case, I'd had the vial for about 5 months and I knew it would be going bad soon. (Honestly, for the way I treated it, I was surprised it had lasted that long!) I got a prescription for the pens and got a pen as backup. About a week later, I started noticing what seemed like a higher occurrence of skipped/fur shots (I.e. cycle where it seemed like he had gotten no shot). I switched to the pen for about a week and his cycles stabilized. I tried the vial again and it seemed like another missed shot or a reduced dose, even. That's how I knew the vial had gone bad. With the pen, Mikey is on 2.5u 2x/day currently and I just finished the last pen to the very end (about 2 months' worth or so) without any hiccups.

Perhaps not. But we are already using the insulin past the manufactureres advised expiration date of 28 days. Sanofi never tested the viability of the Lantus past 28 days.

We have plenty of anecdotal evidence that it can be used past the 28 days. I don't know too many people here that could afford to throw out a barely empty bottle every month.

Because of financial constraints of many of our members, we do what ever we can to help protect the insulin and make it last longer. That means keep away from light, refrigerate, do not freeze, etc. Why not handle the insulin vial with care?

The manufactureres website does say you do not need to shake the insulin.

Do you have some research to support your statement? I'd love to read it and add it to my favorites.
 
There is no need to roll a clear insulin like Lantus or Levimir. That is why the manufacturers say that. Rolling impart no more "damage" to the insulinthan normal handling of the insulin.

I rolled my Lantus vial for the first couple of months and I got ~5 months' worth out of it. :lol:
