On all the videos I have watched on drawing insulin from vial or pen none showed to sterilize the top with alcohol before each draw.am I suppose to do this?girl a pharm told me to do this but since they weren't giving good advice with other things I decided to ask here.also vet handed me a bunch of papers on how to give shots etc.and it says to draw the syringe back after you stick needle in skin to check for air or blood.air means not in skin and blood means hit a vein and must take needle out and shoot in different spot.should I do this every time too?also if u hit a vein blood would get in insulin in needle and stuff so I would have to throw that out and make up new one right?decided to ask and make sure on everything I can.

I never wipe the rubber stopper before withdrawing insulin. I do keep the rubber stopper covered when store in the fridge.
I never drawback on the syringe after sticking my cats. I just tent the skin, insert the needle and push the plunger.

Ok thanks will be easier and quicker to do like just doing a vaccine shot.

My vet tech told me to pull back the syringe to see if there was blood also. I stopped doing it because I was getting fur shots. And apparently, it is very rare that you would inject into a vein with the tent method.

I also stopped doing it (pulling back on syringe) I found I had to hold the syringe very awkwardly and it took me forever to shoot My vet also advised me to pull back, but another vet said didn't have to. I do sterilize the top of the insulin vial with alcohol every time - it dries as I am rolling the vial.

Yeah pulling back on it causes me to move the needle around some under her skin and it ends up hurting her and she cries.when I just inject she don't feel it at all.

I have never pulled back on the syringe, as it is a subcutaneous injection and the chance of hitting a significant source of blood is fairly slim, not like an IM shot where you're more likely to hit a vein.
