I know a wet food diet is preferred but I am wondering what your thoughts are on this kibble,

Unfortunately, the Instinct Raw Boost Kibble has about 31% carbs so definitely not a good choice for a diabetic cat. If you are located in the US there are a few better low carb options including EVO Cat and Kitten, Wysong Epigen 90, and Young Again (only available online). If you are in Canada, the lowest carb kibble is Petcurean Fit and Go at about 14% and Instinct Ultimate Protein or Instinct Grain Free at approx. 17%. If you are elsewhere, there may be options that other members could lead you to if you let us know where you are located.

Is there a particular reason you want kibble?
 
Thank you.. Honestly...when I feed my diabetic wet he becomes insatiable and I create a monster and he doesnt leave me alone . and he also likes to eat often
 
Excess hunger can be a sign of high blood sugar or low blood sugar and some cats seem to get hungry when their insulin starts to work. Are you home testing to be able to see if any of these might explain the excess hunger? Have you calculated how much food (calories) Cody needs based on ideal body weight. If you were feeding kibble before, perhaps, you need to increase the amount of wet food he's getting. Are you feeding him twice a day or more often? Most of us spread the ration for the day out between several meals. Some feed 4 times a day, others 6 times depending on what works for your schedule and your cat.

If you can figure out what is causing the insatiable appetite, then you might be able to solve the problem without resorting to kibble. I have a kibble addicted cat who will not touch canned food and it makes dealing with the diabetes a little more difficult so if Cody is eating canned food without any problem, I would be really hesitant to add any kibble into the mix.

Following on from Linda's post, the feeding schedule needs to be informed by the action of the insulin being used. With harsher insulins like Caninsulin (aka Vetsulin) and Novolin the bulk of the food allowance for each twelve hour cycle needs to be fed up front and somewhat before the insulin dose is administered in order to allow the carbs to get into the bloodstream before the insulin dose kicks in (20-30 minutes for Caninsulin/Vetsulin; possibly longer for Novolin).

Hi. Thank you for your replies. I have just started home testing. This cat has alwayssssss been addicted to food. Cody is about 14 lbs. He started at 20. I bought fancy feast classic.I have not started to regularly feed him this. How much of these small cans do you give? I can feed 3 times a day.
 
My fear also is. With 2 cats in the household buying canned food will be more expensive than a 35 dollar bag that lasts me about a month??? What do you think. .
 
Cody would need roughly 260 calories/day based on an ideal weight of 14 lbs. which would equate about 2 1/2 to 3 cans per day of FF based on approx. 95 calories per can. Some of the FF flavours may be more or less calories. If he was previously 20lbs., is he a bit lighter than he should be or does he still need to lose some weight? Is he active or very lazy? The formula for calculating needed calories is 13.6 X ideal weight in lbs. +70 but that can be adjusted up or down depending on the need for weight loss/gain and activity level.

There may be other more economical food options available depending on where you are located so if you let us know where you are, we can direct you to the appropriate food lists.

Definitely make sure you are home testing regularly before removing all the kibble from Cody's diet as most cats have a significant drop in their BG when kibble is removed and require his dose of insulin to be decreased. You also need to remove the kibble slowly as you increase the canned food to avoid causing any GI upsets.
 
HI. Thank You so much. I was never told his ideal weight. He is def a lazy cat. I am located in NJ, US.
 
I just ran out of the food Ive been feeding him for 4 yrs which Ive been told here is 30 percent carb kibble. I am not totally ready to make the transition to wet food. I am thinking of purchasing EVo in the mean time.. Is this ok?
 
EVO Cat and Kitten dry is about 8% carbs so it's one of the very few dry food options for diabetic cats. Do watch your Cody's weight and BG readings though because the EVO is very high calories food and some folks have reported it raised BG levels.
