Could an experienced member please discuss this issue? Lumpiness in the area of injection sites. This is something I have suddenly noticed and I was wondering if anyone has experienced it. We rotate injection sites, so that is not the problem, but any information about this from someone who has had experience with it would be welcome. Thank you

Some cats do have subcutaneous fatty lumps called lipomas (a benign tumor of fat). They feel somewhat rubbery and can be moved a bit. They do not seem to be painful to the cat (they usually aren't to a human).

Alternatively, is it possible you injected into the skin, instead of under the skin? I've done that and it will make a bleb in the skin which may then ulcerate to clear out the injection.

Or that you have contaminated the needle and there is an infection?

Thank you for both replies, I appreciate them . It is possible that they were skin injections, as I don't always do the injecting, perhaps I need to review the procedure with those doing the injecting. Since he is on an antibiotic, I don't think there is infection.

Hope, I am glad you mentioned that, because we shoot int he scruff and we have moved to the side now. I think that may be the answer. I hope the lumpiness resolves on its own.

Jill, when Mishka came along I had already dealt with Patches(GA) for 4 years, Baby(GA) for 5 1/2 years and Hope for 1 year so I don't think I was giving skin injections  Mishka just got those lumps in the scruff.

I think what you are saying is: you had alot of experience when giving injections, so since Mishka had the lumps, it would not have been due to accidental skin injections.. am I correct in that interpretation? confused_cat I just want to be certain of what you mean.
So.. perhaps I can rule out the possibility that we are injecting into Caesar's skin? His BGs have been consistent, so I do not believe this is happening, but I just wanted to be sure of what you mean and try to avoid the probability that we are not doing something incorrectly. This is new as of last week and we have been shooting successfully for the last 3 1/2 months, so it is a curious thing to me at this point ;-) . Thanks.

Yup, that's what I meant :-D I always shot Patches(GA) Baby(GA) and Hope in the scruff with no problems. Along comes Mishka and lumps ;-) so I started the side with her and lumps went away. FWIW, I have always used a 1/2" needle 29 gauge. Mishka likes to be different. Probably been 8 1/2 years now since I went to the sides on her. Some people also believe you get better absorption shooting in the sides.

Thank you for that!! We use a 31 gauge needle 5/16"..does that sound like it makes a difference?

Mine are just used to a 29 gauge and as far as the short 5/16" compared to the long 1/2" I think some find with the long their cats feel it so they go to the short. I can't tell if I am in or not with the shorts. As for absorption, some think they get better with the long than the short. All personal choices.

wooooooo... too many variables for me.. LOL. I just took what the pharmacy had..how's that for careful planning!? ( :o ) Well.. if it is all personal choice, I guess we will stick to what we are used to. I appreciate the advice, however. Experience speaks the loudest in my ears, so thanks for giving me your "wow" (words of wisdom)

Poopy will get the little lumps, too. Haven't figured out a rhyme or reason yet though. I shoot the sides (right in AM, Left in PM) and always a different spot. I think some cats are just more prone to them.

Thank you, Teresa. It helps to know it isn't just me experiencing this. ;-)

I'm wondering if certain cats may be having a reaction to the form of insulin, since it isn't an exact match to feline insulin. Maybe its a mild reaction and goes away over time.
Just a thought.

Poopy's lumps don't stay. I'll notice one in an area, then it will go away. Then another will become noticable, then go away. One reason I haven't really worried about them.

I thought perhaps it was just the body's reaction to the trauma of having injections over and over. I now that happens in humans, too. Even after one injection you can get a lump.. ya know? I can see his are slowly going away already.
