hi everyone,

Does anyone inject more then two times per day based on BGL?
Tribby is on flagyl for her bowel and it causes an increase in her BGL within 2 hrs of taking it.

I know humans inject more often based on their BGT's, do cats need this as well?

Thanks,

Cass and Tribby

Is that what's called Micro-dosing?
Do humans still get insulin pumps "planted" in them like pacemakers and how does that work?

I think it is Noah. Cass as another new diabetic kitty mom, I personally wouldn't do micro dosing yet. Other experienced members might be able to help manage Timmy's 2x dose with meds effecting his bg. ^_^

Yes, sometimes a bolus insulin is used in addition to a basal insulin... similar to the method used by a lot of humans. However it's an advanced technique used with longer acting insulins like Lantus, Levemir, or Prozinc (not Caninsulin) and should be attempted with experienced help after a whole lot of data has been collected to support the decision.

There are a few different ways to handle problems such as you've described. Another is to give the basal insulin every 8 hours if there is a lack of duration. However, shooting a basal insulin three times a day is not the norm and it makes for a grueling schedule for the caregiver. It's usually suggested only as a last resort... when everything else has failed.

Since Tribby was diagnosed earlier this month, I think it's premature to think in terms of employing any advanced techniques. Have you had a chance to set up a spreadsheet to track Tribby's data?

Members will have a better idea of how to help you with her once Tribby's data as been entered on a spreadsheet.

No. Typically (Edited to add: on the FDMB), micro-dosing refers to administering tiny doses... usually in increments less than a half unit.
