Increase in only one of the daily dosages

Hi all,
My vet advised me to increase only one of the daily vetsulin dosages from 1 to 1.5, keeping the other at 1. He says to keep it consistent, either increase the morning or the evening dosage every day and do not switch around, but he said to pick the one when she eats the most. My question: is it important for her to be eating the most just before injection, at injection, or the hours after?

test before injection, feed after, test 2 hours after injection because Vetsulin can drop cat's BG early in the cycle quite a lot. You need to check how your cat reacts to it and if she goes too low you need to make sure that she has food available.
I like feeding a diabetic cat small regular meals throughout the day and night and if you are not there you might need to use an automatic cat feeder.
Only testing will tell you how your cat reacts to insulin, you will see a pattern if you set up a spread sheet where you log in the numbers. It is the most valuable tool when treating FD.
I don't understand your vet's decision to change one of the doses and not the other. If you want to do that (for some unknown and strange reason), cat's have lower BG during the night and you are asleep so you don't have much control, lower dose at night and higher for the day would make more sense unless your lifestyle means that you are awake at night and sleep during the day. The most important thing is to keep the cat safe.

The important thing is to keep testing so you know how your cat reacts to different doses. It can take a long time to get this data, the lowest level with vetsulin is normally 4-6 hours after the dose and it can be a big drop in some cats. Dosing is based on how low the cat goes. If you can set up a spreadsheet you are looking for blue numbers at the lowest point to start with.

please read all the information provided here so you have some knowledge which is very important otherwise it feels like you moving around in the very unfamiliar territory.
After you've read everything (about your insulin, how it works, how to do injections properly, how and what to feed and more importantly NOT to feed, how to do SS - look at Rocky SS by clicking on the blue line under my post or anybody's post) 10 times (ha ha ha), spend some time thinking about it, print important information and use coloured highlighting pens to mark things you will need to go back to and after that ask questions. Don't be shy, ask anything however trivial it seems as we are here to help you and give you all support you need with the aim of getting your beloved kitty into remission.
In order to get the SS going you need to set up a Google email account but please don't worry about it as we all have it.
I have gone to hell and back with the whole FD journey and almost lost my sanity but it is so worth it.
If you have any difficulties and struggles don't bottle it up, we share our stories here and become friends helping each other.

With Vetsulin, cats should be fed 30 minutes before the injection so they have food on board. Vetsulin works too quickly to give to an empty cat.
 
Thanks everyone. We has an emergency visit on Saturday to the vet, where we got Cerenia and Pepcid and Mirtazapine. She ate fairly well until today, and now, well, she hasn't really eaten since this morning. I gave her doses of Cerenia and Pepcid both days, and with vet advice, gave more mirtazapine today. Still not eating, despite trying 5 different kinds of healthy cat food, deli turkey, dry food even, and cottage cheese. Every now and again she goes on a prowl like she's hungry, but only nibbles at best. Vet said to call again tomorrow if she doesn't eat overnight. She got her full insulin shot this morning, since she ate, but got a half-shot tonight at vet's instruction. Does this sound familiar to anybody? Is there a magic formula for Mango right now?

I am having the same problems. Vet just started me on mirtazipine today. Also told me if nausea happens again to use the pepcid. I haven't used that yet. I finally got mine to eat bacon today. I put out several plates of food and she acts like she wants to eat it and then walks away. Keep us posted on what the vet says. Prayers for you and kitty
 
you may consider asking you vet about ondanestron for nausea--it works great!!
Pepcid does work for acid but it also destroys the stomach acid needed to break food down properly-
If kitty has any heart issue I would reconsider pepsis as well--
Mirtz is great for 1 of mine or cypro but never give if nauseated--who wants to eat if they want to puke?:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Labs in from the vet, and all looks good????????? Mango still isn't eating heartily. A few nibbles and two bouts of diarrhea. Vet said to see how she is by tonight or tomorrow, then go from there. I'll ask about ondanestron if she doesn't improve by then.

Prayers for all your kitties not doing so great right now, too!

Florastor is supposed to be one of the best. I just use one I found at a local feed store. If you shop around, make sure there is no sugar in it. @Bobbie And Bubba can tell you about the Florastor.
 
Hi there! Florastor is a S. Boulardii probiotics that I got from CVS drug store. It is a bit pricey ( bottle of 50 cost $ 54) It helped tremendously when Bubba had days of diarrhea and didn't want to eat. The therapeutic dose is 1/2 capsule twice a day. Then after the diarrhea stops you can go to a maintence dose of 1/4 capsule twice a day. I added it right to his food twice a day.

There is another S. Boulardii called Jarrow, you can get online. It is a lot cheaper, $17 a bottle. The problem with it, is it has MOS added, (MannanOligoSaccharides) MOS, is an oligosaccharide from the cell walls of S. cerevisiae that can discourage bacteria from adhering to the epithelial cells and reduce their proliferation. The problem with the MOS added is that it is bitter and then not easily added to food and you would have to put it in a gel cap to get into your cat.
