I'm worried about Jeddie

He has something going on with his mouth - has been drooling for about a month and now his front paws, where he would rub his mouth, are yellowish colored (should be white). This morning he was pawing at his mouth. I have tried to look in there when he yawns and tried to open his mouth, which he resists. I don't see any masses when he yaws, but I can't see the outside edges of his teeth that way.

I think his appetite has dropped off. He has been eating treats at testing time, but he was 60 at PS last night after being 260 in the morning. His normal PS has been in the 100s with occasional spikes into the 200s. I have been slowly lowering his dose to try and even out his PS from before when he would swing from low 100s to mid 200s.

Obviously, I have to get him to the vet. I spoke to her yesterday, when I had my aunt's cat in for a depo shot (long story, see below), and she is concerned about oral cancer because he is drooling. Oral cancers have a very poor prognosis. Maybe he just needs a dental. Of course, I have no money for an expensive dental (or worse), so I am not sure what I am going to do.

My aunt's cat is almost 15 and has had IBD symptoms for over a year. I keep taking him in. His blood word is fairly normal for a cat his age with the beginnings of renal insufficiency, but nothing else shows up. He is very skinny, wants food all the time (yes, I have repeatedly taken his BG and it is normal), and has loose stools and isn't using the LB. He seems to have to go suddenly and can't make it to the box. She is talking about having him put down, so depo shots are a last resort. The first one seemed to help a bit, so we will continue. I have had her change his diet and add probiotics and enzymes, but nothing seems to make a big difference. He really needs someone that can trouble shoot his diet. Raw would probably help, but she won't feed it. She won't feed anything I suggest for long and just goes back to FF and Meow Mix. And someone needs to retrain him to the box, but my aunt is not able to do these things. She won't even push him down when he tries to get into her dinner on her tray - no "firmness" in discipline at all. Plus, she was in the hospital all this week with an intestinal obstruction hence me taking over getting her cat to the vet. I may end up with him if I am to prevent him from being PTS over this.

Sheila, one of my cats had the drolling thing also, it was an infection where he had lost a tooth. I hope Jeddie's is nothing more serious. Please keep us updated, and in the meantime, positive thoughts sent your way. Your aunt's cat is lucky to have you nearby. Sounds like he just needs a change of diet and a lifestyle change. Poor guy.
You have your hands full, praying it all works out well.

Sheila, Klinger was a drool fool before he lost his tooth a few months ago. I wonder if Jeddie is about to lose a tooth. Klinger doesn't allow us to look in his mouth, so we also had to steal glimpses when he yawned. I never saw anything abnormal before he lost his tooth...something to keep in mind. How does his breath smell?

Sorry to hear about your aunt's cat. I know you've been trying to get his IBD under control for a few months now. Has he been tested for hyperthyroidism? I hope your aunt will take your advice to heart. Sending healing thoughts to both boys.

I have to second what Marcy asked about the Hyper-T for your aunt's cat. Even though you said bloodwork is "normal' unless they sent out for a T4 and Free-T there is no way to tell on typical bloodwork what is going on with thyroid. (((Sheila))) I cannot imagine the anguish of trying to help a cat owned by a relative who won't listen. This isn't like it's with their care or finances, this is another living creature which depends on her to take care of him. Maybe you could tell her that if she won't let you instruct her on how to properly care for her pet that you will have to report her to the officials for abuse. They used to call that kind of attitude with relatives, "Tough Love." Sometimes even the threat may get you somewhere.

I'm sorry to hear about Jeddie. If he needs a dental, DCIN can try to raise money to help him, as they do for all their adoptees. Also, if there is something going on in his mouth, that may very well be why he's becoming difficult to regulate and even predict what his BGs are going to do. I hate to hear you fretting about some type of ominous disease. I know we all "go there" because we know a lot more than the average owner about kitty illnesses and we can't help but think the worst.

From the experiences here, sounds like he may have a rotten tooth. We'll be praying the best for him. cat_pet_icon

Thanks everyone.

Of course, I wasn't thinking cancer until Dr. Pat mentioned it first off. I had been thinking a rotten tooth or "serious need" for a dental until I spoke to her. I just know I can't wait on this, but I guess I will take it one step at a time.

I'm not sure why she thought cancer first when all I said was he had been drooling for a month and had stains on his paws. She knows that I have a lot of cat health knowledge and am straight forward about wanting to know the facts and that I won't undertake a test that won't change the treatment options, etc. just to "know" for sure (if that is possible), so maybe she was preparing me for the worst?

Matthew, my aunt's cat, has had a free T4 by ED done within the year and it was the low end of normal, which is where a 13-14 y.o. cat's should be. I have told my aunt to feed him and his sister (also thin and poor coated) "as much as they want", but just tonight she said to Matthew, "I think you are over fed" when he was asking for food. Arrrgh! His sister has had I131 done and ever since then she has been in poor shape. Her coat looks like hypoT to me, but she has also had follow up T4 that is in the normal range.

The only thing I can think of with these two is that my aunt used to smoke 1-1/2 packs a day from the time she got them as kittens until they were about 5 or 6. And she is one of those people that regulates the house temp with heat/ac and rarely opens windows. I just wonder what kind of damage that did to them. Poor things.

Sheila, so sorry to hear Jeddie is not feeling well cat_pet_icon prayers coming he feels better soon and its nothing bad , its so hard when our babies don't feel well big :YMHUG: to you and hopefully your aunt will come around !!

Hopefully, it is just a loose tooth. Tigger had that too when one of his front fangs was loose. It was pretty simple at the time. I hope that is all it is with Jeddie too.

Looking forward to hearing what the vet has to say when she gets a look. (((hugs)))

He was 61 at PS tonight. I can't wait another hour for a safe number because I have to leave early for jury duty tomorrow morning so I would be shooting at +9 or something. I don't want to do that with things the way they are now so I am skipping the shot.

Please send prayers, vibes, whatever it takes to keep me off a jury tomorrow. I need to get Jeddie to the vet AND take my aunt to the doctor on Weds. If I get on a jury I can't do that.

I have thought this through and I believe we need a cap on how many time we get called for jury duty. I have been called 8 times now and have been on 3 juries. That is too much when no one I know has been called that many times or even once. I feel I have more than held up my citizen's responsibilities regarding jury duty.

I hope Jeddie is ok! I vote on a bad tooth as well.
Sending prayers and good vibes your way.
Best wishes for your Aunt's cat too.

Ugg jury duty! I can not believe you had to do it 3 times and were called 8 times. That is just crazy!!

I got called in last year. It was actually a lucky thing I did not have to serve. First off it was a child abuse case in which they had DNA , so guess what he was way guilty in my eyes. ( was going to use that as an excuse first)
But sitting right in front of me was my sister, she is a victim/witness advocate for the prosecutor's office. Conflict there, had to go the bench where the judge sat and explain why I couldn't serve. Plus I knew a few of the police officers and investigators on the case. And last lucky thing was that I had plane tickets booked several months in advance for exactly when the trial would have started.
Whew!

Sheila you have helped us all countless times and in countless ways and I speak for myself but have a feeling I'm not alone. I will help in anyway I can; financially, emotionally, etc.

Because you included that he's been rubbing it, it definitely sounds like some sort of oral irritation and dental disease is the most common reason for drool in indoor cats. This type of drooling is often associated with a foul odor and sometimes even blood in the drool. This could explain the staining on his paws.

I know that cancer is always scarey consideration. Mouth cancer is most common in older to middle aged cats, rarely seen before about 7-8 years of age. These cats often have swelling of their face, and sometimes even a deviation of their normal jaw alignment. From your description, this just doesn't seem to be what's going on - these masses are usually quite large by the time they're "noticed".

I'll be thinking about you!

Jessica

I'm voting for a bed tooth as well...Maxwell is drooling as well and occassionally staining his paws, which is why he has a dental scheduled for next month. In his case though they think it is just he has huge pieces of tartar that are rubbing the inside of his mouth.

Paws crossed that you can avoid jury duty, but I agree the system is fubared, you have been called all those times and yet I turn 49 on the 10th of this month and I have never been called...that seems to odd to me.

It so totally depends on how the state (or county) gets it's list- usually from voter registration or if you move or if you change your drivers license.

In Arkansas you can only 'serve' once every three years. So, for 9 years, I served every three years because my cushion had expired  but the rest of my family has never been called- except my brother and they, for some strange reason, didn't want to fly him up from Florida each time...

Hope you get a chance to get out of it as you have appointments you cannot miss.
