Edited to add: I was just looking over the food chart available here. and it looks like all Friskies Classic Pates are OK. Maybe I should not worry about calculating according to what I've read, and just stop worrying?
I've just switched Jack from dry to canned, and I'm completely confused about the carbohydrate count in canned food. I've been reading that the carbs should be less than 10%, and ideally 5%-6% or less. I've been calculating carbs using the following formula - add up percentages of protein, fat, fiber, moisture, and ash and the remaining leaves the percentage of carbs. Then...find the dry percentage of the food by removing the moisture from the equation. Lastly, divide the calorie number by the dry food percentage then multiply by 100, and this gives a more accurate carb count. With this in mind, I'm finding it difficult to find many canned foods that fall within the 5%-6% of carbs. I'm using FF right now, but it's costly for me with 5 cats and a very tight budget. I see that others feed Friskies Classics, but when I do a carb calculation I find it to be an 11% carb count. Also, should I be concerned about rice as an ingredient (it's in a lot of Friskies Classics), artificial flavor, and the Carrageenan? Are those ingredients safe? I'm quite concerned about the cost of canned food, and would love to be able to switch to Friskies, but I'm worried about the 11% carbs and the not-so-good ingredients,. What should I do?
