I'm thinking I need a new No Shoot number

Well after a few months of struggle it looks like we've done it and have Musette on a good dose. But now it looks like I'm going to need a new no shoot number, I did shoot at a lower number than usual last night. As previously my cut off point was 150 and went ahead and shot 1u at 124, and this morning she was still in the blues at 148 which she again got her 1u. So now I'm thinking of moving my "no shoot" to 120 unless she tells me otherwise. This is new territory for me, the shooting low to stay low, so does this sound like I'm on the right track.

Yesterday's little mini curve was absolutely perfect for Lantus, nadir right where it should be at +6 and nice slow rise afterwards. I have my fingers and toes all crossed right now that we finally have regulation, now begins trying to get to tight regulation, and then (saying a quick anti-jinx prayer) OTJ.

She was such a little stinker last night on being tested, she didn't want to be tested, she wanted to PLAY! She was batting at the meter, the rice sock, my hair etc. She has NEVER been like that before at test time...lol. Normally I go to test her and she is waiting on her table, where I keep her test kit, then will just climb in my lap to be tested. Last night she was waiting again as usual but instead of crawling in my lap she was being a pill trying to bat at eveything she could get her paws on, an afterwards jumped off the bed and came back with her crochet ball wanting me to play with her...So she has to be feeling so much better.

And she just told me otherwise...or at least that 1u is now too high for her, so down we go again....Planning on shooting a scant below 1u, like 1 drop below so basically a .8u tonight, depending on her numbers of course or unless I hear otherwise. Come on baby girl, keep making momma drop your dose...OTJ would be a wonderful christmas present for momma.

I know she blew that idea (new lower do not shoot number) out of the water, but I have a different take on do not shoot numbers - and this applies to kitties that have enough data and/or someone around to test and monitor, not newbies or those that have "new" low numbers, but no data and are not home to test.

I shoot whatever number I am comfortable with (but not usually below 85) to stay on a 12/12 schedule as best as I can, but sometimes that means I reduce the dose a tad on those low 100s or below. If I were to skip, then it means testing until there is a rise and a late shot which messing things up.

If shooting those lower numbers results in a 38 like you saw today, then the dose gets lowered and that's the new dose until the next number below 50 (I go with 50 and not 40 in the Tilly protocol). I keep this step down process going until I can not make any more reductions (dose = .05u) and THEN I set a do not shoot below number and start skipping shots.

I really don't think that "shoot low to stay low" is a truism. These insulins keep the BG more steady then the faster insulins (when the right dose is found) so the BG is going to be lower, but I see too many people that think that means shoot a full dose on a 45 because some normal, non-diabetic cats have BGs of 45. I don't think we can safely go with the BG ranges of a non-diabetic cat. I really don't want my FD getting below 60 on insulin and I feel more comfortable with 80.

Beau plummeted from the mid 100s (145-180) on such tiny doses that I could not "shoot the lows to stay low". And if I shoot Jeddie at 86, I always shave off .05u - .1u from his normal dose.

Anyway, just keep take those step-downs with her. Sounds like she is feeling really good.

Yeah I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that whole "shoot low to stay low" thingy either...Below about 100 starts making me nervous, especially with Musette as she has proven that she can nose dive if the dose is only slightly too high. She reacts harshly to insulin. And while I can wait her out for a rising number it screws up the whole day's routine when it comes to the rest of the Fur Gang's feeding schedule and I like to avoid screaming hungry Meezers if at all possible...lol.

I think I'm way more comfortable to just keep shaving off her dose everytime she is either lower than I'm comfortable with, or hands me an ultra low number somewhere in her cycle.

So right now I think my plan with her is to shave a drop off the next dose if she either is below 120 or drops below 50 in the cycle...especially if that low comes with her pmps as she seems to run lower at night than during the day. Because I'm with you, I don't like not having some wiggle room while they are on insulin. I have gotten a little more comfortable about shooting insulin into say a 120 number, as long as it is a reduced dose than I was with Maxwell, but still don't like shooting a full dose into a cat that has dropped into the 40 or even 50s during their cycle on that full dose.
