Hiiii everyone I'm a new diabetic mom, my boy is 8 years old and was diagnosed a month ago, no clue what I'm doing and am becoming increasingly more overwhelmed as time goes on....

I was given basically no info from my vet other than "your cat is diabetic, needs 2 units of Lantus twice a day after eating and come back for more bloodwork in 4 weeks" I have sent emails and asked questions and am always ignored..... I've been doing the research myself and am still confused.... I bought the accu-check guide monitor test at home, cuz it's been a month of him being on insulin and he hasn't been checked.... I've only used it twice so far just to test it out cuz I'm supposed to do a curve either today or tomorrow....
I'm having a hard time... The monitor doesn't seem to want to read his BG I feel like I'm just wasting strips and hurting him.....
I tested his BG before giving him food tonight and it was a 3.0mmol/l.... When I told my friend and she told me NOT to give him his insulin dose and to feed him and check him again in an hour or 2..... Can someone help me cuz I'm so lost

Hello, I've moved your post back to the Feline Health forum. We ask that people stay here until they get their spreadsheet set up, I see that Bhooma is helping with that, which is great. The Lantus forum is quite busy and you'll get more help here until the spreadsheet is ready to go and we can see some blood sugar data.

Your friend is right. 3.0 (mmol/L) or 54 is way too low for you to give insulin now. Thank goodness you checked his blood sugars! You do not want his numbers below 2.8 (50) and if you had given him the shot, he could possibly have gone much lower. Your best option may be to skip insulin tonight and start again tomorrow. Was he diagnosed with ketones or DKA? With either of those present it's more important to give some insulin.

I suspect his insulin dose is too high. We typically start cats at around 1.0 units. Tomorrow you should not shoot 2.0 units of insulin. Do you have syringes with 1/2 unit markings on them?

Tip on the Guide (and any other meter): don't fully insert the test strip into the meter before you have a drop of blood ready to go. Just stick the test strip far enough into the meter so that it holds in place but the meter doesn't turn on. Get cat and the rice sock or whatever method you are using to warm the ear up with ready. When the ear is warmed up enough, then push the test strip all the way into the meter to turn it on. It takes a few seconds and, in those few seconds, poke with the lancet to get blood. Alternatively, poke to get blood and then push the test trip all the water into the meter. Touch the edge of the test strip to the drop of blood and set the meter aside while you hold a tissue to the ear to stop any bleeding and reward the cat with a low carb treat.
