Hi, my cat, Tommy, was diagnosed via email today.
Things to note:
*I work at a Vocational/Day program for adults with disabilities and am not allowed to accept phone calls during program hours for supervision purposes.
*I just got a new client on my caseload with diabetes. I received training and now test his blood with a glucose meter and inject insulin by looking at a specific set of numbers to find how many units to inject.
*I can afford Tommy's insulin with help of family and strict budgeting.
*I go to the Humane Society Clinic. They offer discount services and have great staff. However they are impossible to get a hold of and have a long waiting list to get appointments.
*Tommy is 15 years old. I noticed him peeing and drinking more than usual, begging for food and walking on the flat part of his foot instead of the toes. I brought him in and they were thinking it was arthritis or diabetes. I never knew cats could have diabetes. This was one week ago. I did lots of research and immediately, on impulse, threw out his dry food. I bought fancy feast classic pate and have boiled chicken for when he begs for food. I bought a glucose meter and test strips and lancets.
I knew he had diabetes because his number was 401 on his blood work but have been waiting for the fructosamine test result email to confirm diagnosis.
That came at 3:45 pm today. They close at 4pm. I'm annoyed and tired and confused and upset.
The email confirmed diabetes and said the vet made a prescription (how do I receive that?) and I should come in on Friday at 11am with the insulin and needles. Like what???? That gives me one day to find insulin with what prescription and I have no idea what the hell I'm doing!
Then they want to do a 8 hour test for the curve and I don't want that. I want to test and inject myself.
I'm super upset and I consider myself to not be dumb but this is making my brain hurt.
Thank you for my rant, Shelley, super sad, frustrated pet mom of Tommy
