I'm new and 100% confused

Hi, my cat, Tommy, was diagnosed via email today.
Things to note:
*I work at a Vocational/Day program for adults with disabilities and am not allowed to accept phone calls during program hours for supervision purposes.
*I just got a new client on my caseload with diabetes. I received training and now test his blood with a glucose meter and inject insulin by looking at a specific set of numbers to find how many units to inject.
*I can afford Tommy's insulin with help of family and strict budgeting.
*I go to the Humane Society Clinic. They offer discount services and have great staff. However they are impossible to get a hold of and have a long waiting list to get appointments.
*Tommy is 15 years old. I noticed him peeing and drinking more than usual, begging for food and walking on the flat part of his foot instead of the toes. I brought him in and they were thinking it was arthritis or diabetes. I never knew cats could have diabetes. This was one week ago. I did lots of research and immediately, on impulse, threw out his dry food. I bought fancy feast classic pate and have boiled chicken for when he begs for food. I bought a glucose meter and test strips and lancets.
I knew he had diabetes because his number was 401 on his blood work but have been waiting for the fructosamine test result email to confirm diagnosis.
That came at 3:45 pm today. They close at 4pm. I'm annoyed and tired and confused and upset.
The email confirmed diabetes and said the vet made a prescription (how do I receive that?) and I should come in on Friday at 11am with the insulin and needles. Like what???? That gives me one day to find insulin with what prescription and I have no idea what the hell I'm doing!
Then they want to do a 8 hour test for the curve and I don't want that. I want to test and inject myself.
I'm super upset and I consider myself to not be dumb but this is making my brain hurt.
Thank you for my rant, Shelley, super sad, frustrated pet mom of Tommy

Hello, Shelly and welcome to the FDMB. Are you saying you have the prescription now? If so, what kind of insulin is prescribed? I guess you haven’t seen ot uet. It sounds like they expect you to pick up the Rx tomorrow and come with the stiff on Friday. Don’t stress. You’ve already done a great thing by switching to wet low carb food, getting a meter etc. and starting to test Tommy. I am very impressed.
I’m attaching a file that will help you get set up so we can help you better.

Hi, I am so confused because the email said to get the insulin from a pharmacy or online, chewy. I guess I'm old, lol, and don't have a physical copy of the prescription so how do I get the insulin! I'm ready to beat this but just feel helpless because I have no idea how to get the insulin. And how can I get it by Friday at 11am for the appointment to show me how to inject it.
I guess I was thinking I would go to the clinic and pick up the insulin and start treatment but it's not going that way.
Tommy is very.... independent. He does not like anyone but his immediate family and stresses at the vet. ☹️

It’s true. You will most likely need a copy of he prescription to take to a pharmacy. If the insulin is Lantus or one of its generic forms (glargine) you can buy it from a pharmacy near you. If it’s ProZinc, you could order it from Chewy.com or purchase it from a local veterinarian who stocks it.

Unless they want to call it into a pharmacy for you? Just don’t let them give you Caninsulin/Vetsulin. It’s not a good insulin for cats at all.

Im going to call the vet tomorrow, no better yet, I'm going to just show up after work and get the prescription to hopefully be able to get the insulin by Friday at 11am.
I'm super impressed with this forum and I will be making my spreadsheet and signature soon. I seriously feel better just by posting my feelings.

Well you could still go to the clinic and they could show you how to inject, etc. they can use saline. Then you can still get the insulin but maybe just not by Friday.
