And I obviously can't read. Abigail has been on insulin since last June. I thankfully have found this site and am learning so much- Aparently I forgotten how to read. I started buying my syringes from an independent pharmacy because you got more bang for your buck. It's a bigger box so more expensive BUT overall cheaper. I did not realize that the syringes were marked in 1/2 units instead of the Walmart syringes that were marked in 1u increments. So for about 3 weeks Abigail has been getting 1/2 of her dose. I'm such a terrible mother!!!! Since I am now testing her and recording her BG I was thinking to myself how high she is. Now I know why!!!! Let this be a lesson to always always double check!!!

You are not dumb.......you are not a terrible mother....I still have trouble with those marks and have to count down from the 5 to doublecheck.

But I would like your permission to laugh, just a little bit.......

Actually, no you were just fine to start at a lower dose.... now you know that she may need a bit more. There are some cats who need only a .5u dose, so no harm done at all.

Yes you all can laugh at me. And tonight she will be back to her regular dose. With the accidental reduction she really wasn't giving me horrible numbers. So I am hoping going back to 1 and the new zero carb food that comes on Monday will be a good balance

Aw Hon, there's not a one of us that hasn't made a dumb mistake at some point. At least you noticed it and can fix it.

I have to check, check and triple check every time I give a shot, just to be sure I have the dose right. :o

You might want to just take her up .25 because her numbers really weren't that bad......plus you're talking about changing food (I'm assuming she's eating something higher carb at the moment as well) and that's likely to make her drop.

Laugh with you - never at you.....

Tee hee yes yes! She is actually eating the Purina DM that the vet has been selling me without blinking an eye for almost a year. But after seeing all of the research done I am switching to Young Again zero carb. I am trying to entice her into eating wet food but it is a slow slow process. She will eat meat so I am going to try to make my own food eventually

Well here is a trick that I past along to Kim for Smokie and it worked for him...add catnip...or the other herb that drives cats wild is Valerian...sometimes that is all it takes is to get them to at least try it.

I got every lucky with all 14 of mine, they thought they hit the jackpot when mom & dad adopted a sugarcat and did away with the dry food...I got "Its about time you wised up woman and bought the good stuff!"

The zero carb is dry. It is the Young Again food. You had to order it online and mine will be here on Monday. I have a feeling that Abigail will take to a raw food diet more so than the canned food. I was reading Dr Lisa's instructions for making food and it seemed pretty straight forward. DH though thinks that I should leave food making to professionals and told me to just buy raw food. OK the only food that Dr Lisa said was zero carbs and raw that was commercially made is like $4 per lb. You can make your own for about 60 cents per lb. So maybe after some trial and error I can convince him that I will not kill the cats. That is his concern with everything. He tells me I am not a professional so I should leave it to the professionals!

Try starting them out on commercial raw, after you have order and fed it for awhile do a cost breakdown for him, of how much you are going through a month and what it will take to make the same amount at home. One thing with homemade and commerical raw is that because it is so close to their natural diet, they eat far less of it as they do even low carb commerical canned. Because all commerical canned is cooked thus it doesn't still contain all the neutrients of raw. So again less garbage in...less out, and then add in the added saving in less litter use and less insulin use if any at all, and homemade raw comes in even cheaper in the long run.

In fact I'm waiting on my grinder to get here, and I'm about to transition all 14 of mine over to a homemade raw...with Autumn as carb sensitive as she seems to be and as close as she is right now to going OTJ, I'm hoping that a raw diet will tip her over the edge and get her diet controlled.

Here is the shortened version of Dr. L's recipe- the first page is all you need. The full version is on the pages after that, complete with the links to the herbs and my own price account.

Sneakers likes it for a little while, then doesn't, then does, then doesn't without letting me know which way it is at the moment- she's finicky that way  . So I only give it to her a bit at a time.

I bought a grinder last fall- and then she refused to eat it for a while, so it has only been used for one batch, I feel like the stupid human now  , but it will also be great to use if someone kills a deer and gives me some meat- I will like to have it then as it is electric and not a hand-crank model.

I actually am scheduling a consultation with Dr Lisa very soon. My husband feels like if the information doesn't come from a vet then it isn't valid. I am trying to explain to him that Dr Lisa is a diabetic cat specialist. The information I am getting is directly from he website and this forum which she recommends! So maybe after the consultation I can convince him that we can make our own food and in the long run make our kitties healthier and save some money too! All of the information I am getting off of this forum or from Dr Lisa's site has been fabulous. I am looking forward to seeing Abigail bounce back.
