I came on here about a year ago with a newly diagnosed cat (Male 14 yo) and with all the information here, testing at home, we were able to get BG regulated with diet alone. A month or so ago things started going downhill and started testing again and got levels around 280. So back to the vet- though I didnt think this was the only problem (and it isn't- he has a heart murmur and high blood pressure so he's now on meds for that - at least its cheap!). He was 440 at the vet! Though probably some of that due to stress. I started him on Lantus last night - he is getting 1 unit twice a day. Took a reading last night about 2 hrs after giving it and we were at 220. He is an easy cat to give the injection and get blood from luckily. What should I expect as far as readings if its working? Will it take a few days to get it under control or shoull I expect it to work right away?
I was feeding him 3-4 times day all wet food, high protein in hopes of keeping him off insulin. Should I go to feeding him twice a day with his injections only?
Also, Im looking for cheap syringes. The Lantus was $125 at the target pharmacy and Im ok with that since it should last a couple months at this dosing (keeping it in the fridge and handling it carefully- I'm used to working with syringes and vials) but the syringe situation is ridiculous. I need a box of 100. I found these on amazon but there are no reviews. Anyone any feedback?
