Miss Rugs...niece to Smokey...diagnosed today. It has been 2 1/2 years since Smokey left us and I am not sure I have it in me to do this again. BUT I know that I have to and I will. I have forgotten so much but am glad that the FDMB is still here to help.

Ruthe and Miss Rugs

Miss Rugs is 15 and has no other health issues. Her kidneys looked a little bit small on the xrays and her intestinal wall looked a bit thicker than it should be, but only her blood glucose was out of whack. She has lost some weight and I noticed that her spine felt bony. She was helping me open cans of food which set my mind thinking...I really thought it was going to be something kidney related, never diabetes. Cats are on the same diet I started them on when Smokey was diagnosed in 2005, so nothing to switch there. They are free feeders but so was Smokey and we made it work. Will get her picture up here as soon as I can figure out how!

Hi Ruthie. Sorry you are back, but you are among friends

Did you have her tested for hyperthyroid? I just ask because Beau has Hyper-T as well as FD (and cardiomyopathy) and he recently was back on insulin for 9 days, but it has coincided with needing his Hyper-T med increased so I wonder if the higher BGs were from the Hyper-T. There is a connection.

What was her BG at the vet, at diagnosis? And did they do a fructosimine test? Or have you tested at home to see what her non-vet-stress BG is?

I think lev is a great insulin. Both of mine were switched to it from vetsulin.

I went and got a new meter as the battery in Smokey's was dead. Discovered that new One Touch didn't include control solution! What the heck is that all about?! Did "shot time" tests - AM and PM - results range from 374 to 414. She isn't impressed with the ear tests but hasn't hidden under the bed yet - note to self: block off under bed access!

Costco should have the insulin tomorrow so she will get her first shot tomorrow night. I feel better with starting her on a Friday night since I can be home or nearby to see how it goes. I didn't get a copy of her bloodwork yet but will have them fax it to me. She is on Zeniquin for bacteria in the urine. Thank God she loves Pill Pockets! Vet didn't mention anything about thyroid but I will ask him when I call to give him an update next week.

I am so much more ahead of the game then I was in 2005 when Smokey was diagnosed. I remember the relief I felt when I found this board. Of course, sleep as I knew it didn't happen for a looooooooooooooooong time afterwards, but we do what we can for these wonder furry gifts we have been entrusted with!

Glad to see so many familiar faces and whiskers!!
