I'm back - Thumper's at the ER

Thanks for all the prayers & concern everyone. Glad I went ahead & took her right away. Everyone @ the ER was wonderful & I told that vet she knows more than my vet! She mentioned several things but the biggest concern was DKA. The numerous times I asked my vet about checking ketones by blood test they acted like I was nuts....said they had never heard of it...guess what one of the first tests they ran was! She showed trace there & her BG there was 628. That had not crossed my mind this time...I just thought about the lasics ( i don't know if I'm spelling that right ) She also mentioned Thumper was in a lot of pain from her back leg. I told her I thought she had some arthritis but she said her knee actually pops out of place! She had a good # this morning so I guess the stress of the vet all day put her over the top. She was never this high...even when she was diagnosed. I think there are other things possibly going on but I can't remember it all. After she said DKA I don't think I heard anything else. They are giving her the standard care. Told me to call back before I went to bed & in the morning to check on her. She will be there at least 25 hrs...guess most of you know the routine. Don't know what I said earlier but she seemed fine when I first brought her home from the vet. I left again for about 45 mins & when I came back it was time for PMPS..checked & got 600. She didn't get up when I was putting her food out..which has never happened before so I picked her up & sat her by her dish, she fell face forward into her food. I picked her up then she was kinda stumbling then got in the cat bed & peed then ended up going back & jumping on the couch. My daughter got her to eat a turkey treat but she wouldn't eat her food. The rest I guess you know. I'm so glad I went ahead & took her right away. What a night! I feel very comfortable with her being there though, they were great. The only thing they did was try to give her some Hill's prescription food. I gave the tech 2 cans of FF & she said the vet might want her on prescription, I told her the FF was lower carb & I wanted them to give her that. Thanks again for your concern! :YMHUG:
 
OMG, Barbara you must be so stressed out. I am SOOOOOO glad you got her to the ER, and I like your ER vet already! (Maybe she can recommend a new regular vet? ohmygod_smile They probably can't do that, but wow, if your vet missed a knee popping out & ketones & possible DKA, they are officially on my bad list now!!!)

It sounds like she is in good hands, and hopefully they will have her in a good place very soon. If the ketones are at trace hopefully it isn't full-blown DKA yet. I assume they are giving her a fast-acting insulin, and if she eats some I am hopeful she will be ok soon.

I think it might be Lasix. I've only heard of it with race horses (cuz I thought at first they were getting the horses to 20/20 vision but that seemed a little wacky to me (I mean, how would they know?), and then I looked it up and it's a drug they give them, but I don't know why.

Anyhow, hope she is all better soon, and you can get some rest!!!!
 
So glad to hear from you, Barbara. It sounds like this vet is on top of things; I'm glad you can feel more confident that she will get good care. Hope you can rest tonight, and that Thumper will feel much better tomorrow.

Maybe try some of Robin's prescription- wine and deep breathing.

Oh Joanna, a little comic relief! I really did LOL at that last statement! Thanks for that!

I already asked since she couldn't be my vet if they could help me find one!

And yes they have her hooked up to an IV with fluids, fast-acting insulin & potassium if she needs it.
 
Continued prayers for Thumper's quick recovery, and strength and peace for you Barbara. I must confess I've been reading your posts the past few days with trepidation as you kept mentioning the ketones and how your vet just shrugged them off. A recipe for near disaster, but thankfully averted by your quick action. :thumbup

Lasix (furosemide) is a diuretic drug given to make the body pee out any extra fluids it may be holding onto. It's used in heart patients to reduce fluid accumulation and build up around the heart so the heart won't have to work as hard. But it can also dehydrate. That's why Jennifer was concerned about Thumper's electrolyte levels. Trace ketones may be kept at bay with good hydration but maybe getting rid of that hydration could have thrown poor Thumper for a biological loop. Sorry no direct DKA experience here, thank Bast, but based on what I've read of those kitties who have, it's possible.

Rest easy tonight knowing that your girl is being cared for. I-)
 
Barbara, I am so sorry! You know that DKA caught early can turn around quickly. When I heard your description, my thought for a moment was, oh no! but at the time it was seemingly heart related .... my thoughts and prayers are with you and Thumper, I'm so glad you went! I am surprised she is in DKA with trace do you know what it was on the meter? Yes, dehydration and some ketones and high BG can lead you down the DKA road but I've never heard of trace in DKA ..... are they calling it full blown DKA? or? last time Payne was sick after the last DKA, it was only DK because he pH was normal. Weird .... get some rest. Nancy
 
Nancy, they really said "suspected" DKA. The ER vet just called. She said Thumper's urine is very dilute but it's showing no ketones, but that might just be because it is so dilute. The blood test showed trace so if I understand her right Thumper was just headed to DKA.... not in full blown DKA yet. And when I think about it I know they need to be kept hydrated, and the lasix just pulled all the fluid out of her. So, they are fighting that, pumping fluids in. She said she would call me back in the morning again. I really like her...too bad I can't keep her! Thanks again!
 
Thank goodness that someone is finally paying attention to the ketones. Sorry but your regular vet has been on my bad list for a while now. :evil:

She is in good hands tonight. A glass of wine and some deep cleansing breaths will do you wonders.

I'm pouring a glass now .... continued prayers that it doesn't go into DKA! dehydration can be easily turned around. Oh yes, another vote to ditch the vet! you need someone that listens to you AND will give you what you need/want. Nancy and Payne (sitting on my keyboard ..... :)

I'm so sorry that Thumper had to go through all of that, but it sounds like he is great hands now! Your vet ignores ketones?? Yikes. At least Thumper's mom is clued in!

Glad to hear things went well at the ER. Here's to smoother days ahead.

Back to the Lasix and Joanna's comment about horses. During the KY Derby, they always list the horses that have taken Lasix prior to the race. Maybe it's because I'm from KY, but I'm always reminded of the phase--"peeing like a race horse" :lol: and thought my Alex was doing just that when he was first diagnosed.
