IBD food recommendations

While Grayson was out for his SRT treatment they did a scope to determine why his intestine wall was thicker on one end than the other. Conclusion: IBD. Of course I was given 4 different cans of canned food, and 2 types of dry food to try once we got settled back in... I'm sure Grayson would opt for the dry, but I haven't checked carb count on any of them yet...

Has anyone treated IBD, and if so, what food did you use, and what's the carb count?

Hi Lu-Ann, and welcome back!

Latte had IBD/lymphoma. I started by giving her grain free, wet food and also tried some "novel" proteins. Novel proteins are those which Grayson has never been exposed to before (ie/rabbit, venison). I found for Latte, grains/gluten (and probably the friskies) I was feeding her made things worse. I did not notice a change in protein to make much of a difference. ECID.

Anyway, when she was diabetic "we" (meaning her and I ;-) ) agreed upon grain free wellness, fancy feast, and EVO, for the most part. There are other options out there if Grayson is not a picky eater. Merricks and instinct should both be low carb/grain free.

I really liked the FF, cuz if I ran out, I could go to WalMart at 3 am if need be... not quite the same with PetSmart or the "fancy food" pet store in Raleigh! Kim & I had a good time in the Raleigh store one time; Binky's list in hand, looking for food for Kitty. It was like a scavenger hunt!

I guess it's time to expand my horizons! Hopefully the first change we'll see post-SRT will be the disappearance of the ravenous monster! In just a few years I've gone from $6/week in food for the masses; to $12/week (Kitt-N-Kaboodle); to nearly $5/day just for Grayson! :o I may have my sister send me some venison from my BIL/nephews, and the little bunnies they trap in their yard! But only if they come on styrofoam w/ cellophane over it!!! How does a veggetarian diet work w/ IBD?

The testimonials for raw food to literally cure IBD are many. In my opinion, no canned food is going to do it.

Cost of commercially available raw food is fairly high, because of the shipping, but should not be $5/day, even with the shipping. I figured it up to about $17 per 2.5lb tub from Feline's Pride, which should last 6 days, if you give 6 oz/day, so about as much as a can of Wellness per day, since Wellness has gone up so much this year. It's reasonable if you're only feeding it to one cat. Most of us have multiple cats, so that's when it gets very expensive.

Thank you... I'm afraid that 2.5# tub would last about 2 days w/ just Grayson eating it! Hoping we see a reduction in the ravenous monster that is him, but as of this morning, he wasn't even gonna wait til +1 to have his second 3 oz can of FF! He was like, "GIVE IT TO ME NOW MOM!!!" It's not uncommon for us to go through 8 cans in a 24 hr period!

Heading to PetSmart at lunch... will see what they have available too.

Now the next question, typically we change food gradually. 25/75; 50/50; 75/25... I don't see these tuna-sized cans lasting long enough to even get a read if he likes them or if they agree with him. What do you guys think... buy more of each type? And give each a few days to get some sense of him liking them/feeling better???

I've got the feeling I'm gonna start cooking for my guys soon!!!
 
I do agree that I have read awesome things about raw food and IBD. There are lower-priced alternatives to Freline's Pride. And to paraphrase Dr. Lisa--you an spend your money now on a good feline diet or spend your money later on vet bills because of conditions arising from a poor diet.
 
Guess my next step is to look further into the whole raw food thing. I expect that if I do it myself, in the long run it will be more cost effective. Any really good links for Raw will be greatly appreciated!
