Since Meow Mi was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008, he has been on low carb diet. He was on the chicken diet until 2011. In the summer of 2011, he was diagnosed with IBD, so I changed to Evo Beef and Venison. We visit the vet and do blood work every one or two month because IBD, about a year ago, the vet even told me that Meow Mi is free of diabetes but told me that it can return at some point. Now, we are facing the problem again.

Right before X'mas last year, I took him to the vet because he was not eating much for a week, blood work shows everything is fine (liver, kidney) but BG was over 300. so the vet lower the dosage of steroid. However, when we went back to the vet yesterday, BG was still over 300. The vet told me to switch from EVO beef and venison to HILL MD, I told the vet that EVO canned food has lower carbs than Hill MD, but she still wants me to give it a try. Well, I checked his BG after he ate Hill MD, BG went up to 374 compare with EVO beef at 320. The vet wants him to be on Hill MD for 5 days and see if BG will go down, if not, he will have to get insulin shot before he gets sicker. The vet told me that diabetes is not cause by diet alone, it can also be from pancreatic disease/IBD.

I really don't want to put him under insulin shot, as he's taking steroid and antibiotic (for lung infection), how many drug do I have to put into his body?

It has been hard dealing with IBD and now diabetes returns, can't even control the problem with diet anymore. If anyone has experience of kitty with IBD and diabetes, please share.

I don't have any experience with IBD but how long has he been on steroids? Steroids can also cause blood glucose problems which might more the issue than the food.

How much longer does he need the steroids? And are you home testing his blood?

In a cat with multiple conditions, you treat those conditions, then manage any impact on the diabetes.

Yes, it can get complex. You may find you have to make a schedule of meds; I had to do that for Spitzer at one point, because there was no way I could manage it otherwise.

And there comes a point where you may become concerned about quality of life. You'll want to monitor the 5 Ps - purring/contentment, playing/normal behaviors, preening/grooming, pee, and poo, plus eating and drinking.

after two days feeding him Hill MD per vet's request, I decided to cut it out. Meow Mi's BG went from 320 with EVO beef to 385 with Hill MD. I tried to tell the vet Hill MD is not good because I already went through low carb diet search when Meow Mi was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008.
anyway, at this point, his diabetes is no longer controllable with diet, insulin is my only choice. Does anyone try Zoe needle-free insulin injector before?
Both the vet and I agree that Meow Mi's IBD got worse and diabetes returns shortly after he got teeth cleaned.
