So I know eventually I'll be able to laugh about it, but not this day. I was attempting to take Lou to the vet today, and as I walked out of the front door, he frickin pees on me.. and pees and pees and pees. I'm just standing there on the stoop holding him like a little kid out away from me and feeling like I wanted to burst into tears... how do you top a moment like that?? Stupidly or nay, it's hard not to take it personally. :blackeye:

Anywhooo. The real reason for my thread is not to post about my misery or to gain sympathy. My issue is he is 9 years old, has been to the vet before, and has NEVER done anything like this. He seemed really frightened (more so than usual), but usually he would just hang on to me and that would be that. Unfortunately we have a pet carrier, but it's too small for him, and he fights tooth and nail to stay out of it. I had tried that today since it was just me, so he was already in a right state. Still though, I never expected a golden shower. (I'm looking for new Lou-sized carriers as we speak.)

Should I be concerned about this annoying change in personality? Should I look into it as any issues (possible UTI or kidney issue)? Or should I just join the club and try to work around this new, smelly annoyance? :banghead:
 
I have found with Jones...as we go for more visits, more tests etc. He gets more and more worked up each time we go. After his latest ER stay....I hate to see the next time we go.

He was good with his once a year check. Confident even in the vet's office.
 
My Tuxie kitty was exactly the same. He HATED leaving the house with a passion. I devised different approaches to try to "fool" him. One of those was carrying him to the garage where the carrier was all set up for him. As soon as I took him out the back door he peed (huge amounts of course) all down my jean legs and jacket. Once I had him secured in the carrier in the car I did a mad dash back to the house to quickly pull on another pair of jeans and a "fresh" jacket.

So...for kitties that do not like leaving home...this is really not unusual. Over the next few years I devised more approaches to make the vet trip easier, but it was always a struggle.
 
I have one that does that every time.... Allie. Plus she always poops in the carrier on the way. The vet is literally 7 minutes away and she poops every freaking time.

Sorry, but this is a funny image. :D

My girls hate going to the vet, so I did some research and have tried everything I found that might help I can to make it less traumatic. I recently got a new carrier called SleepyPod that I really like. It is expensive, no lie, but it is very nice. I have a soft, little baby blanket inside that I spray with Feliway about 30 minutes before I am going to put one of them in it. I also cover the top of the carrier with a cloth so they cannot see out. This is where it gets really dorky... I have the Relax My Cat music app on my phone, and I play music for them on the drive to the vet, and if we have to wait in an exam room where we hear a lot of noise, I play it in there, too.

I am not sure if the Feliway really does any good. The music actually does seem to relax Mia, though I think Willow might have been thinking, 'what the heck is that crap?'

I have never had one of them pee on me. The last time I took Mia in, when the vet was feeling for her bladder so he could stick the needle in to get urine, she started peeing. :cat:
 
I have one like this too! Peed on two visits and pooped once. So embarrassing when the vet tech had to help wash the carrier and his poop was super smelly!
 
Yep pretty smelly alright. I would greatly suggest a large carrier. Having a free roaming cat in the car is dangerous for you and kitteh.

Two of our kittehs don't like the carrier/vet deal either. But is comes with the territory of keeping them healthy. I guess I'm lucky they never peed on me.
 
Vet visits are hell on Earth for my Bengal boy. He hates the carrier, will run and hide if he thinks it's about to be "deployed", and poops in it almost every trip. I have actually had to cancel visits because he hid so well that I couldn't find him in time to make the appointments!

The same kitty has peed on me, too, but under different circumstances. Twice I have woken up in the middle of the night to find myself being peed on, or sprayed, once right in the middle of my forehead! Let me tell you, that is one very rude awakening!
 
Wow! Thanks a lot everyone! I feel better knowing I'm not the only one. I feel like I can handle a lot, but kitty pee is just something else in it's own stratosphere that makes me want to run the other way. Ugh! I bought a carrier, I'm looking into pee pads, and I got some Feliway spray. Hopefully next week's vet visit will be much more beneficial..... although I am tempted to cancel just so I don't have to deal with that again, haha.
 
Last September (2016), I drove Leo from Austin to Ft Collins for the SRT radiation for the acromegaly. It was 2 days each way. He was in a huge metal wire dog cage, with the litter box in it. He would not use it unless we stopped. But he did use the litter box the whole trip, even in the hotel room. Not a single accident. I'm so lucky to have such a good boy.:)

Maybe you could bring a small litter box for Lou, in case he feels the need and he doesn't see a handy spot. Kudos on getting a bigger carrier.
 
Success!! So today was my rescheduled vet day, and it went beautifully! I had the new carrier, Feliway spray, pee pads, and I used music from the Relax My Cat app (thank you soo much for the suggestions @FurBabiesMama !!) All-in-all, it was smooth, and I think it all helped him be cool calm and collected, as I expect from my buddy Lou. I ended up playing the music prior to loading him in the carrier, in the car, in the vet lobby, and throughout the whole examination. I just played it until we got home. Best news of all, he didn't pee on me!! Hooray!! :woot:

Congrats on a successful vet visit. I hope all the stuff the vet found is innocuous and healthy.
 
:D:D Hahaha this made me chuckle (sorry) it brought back memories of Crunchie. Crunchie would not use a kitty carrier and always went with a harness to the vets. Sat on my knee and looked out the window. At 27 I wasn't going to force the issue. He was such a laid back boy. Please note I would not take Tempest without a carrier! He was just very special.

So we go to the vets and he's plonked on my knee on the way home and was meowing a bit, not like him. Vet had palpatated his bladder/abdomen and tested his urine..
Get close to home and he pees all over me, all over my lap, thighs and the car seat I'm like stop the car! Stop the frikkin car, step out (mums laughing at me!) and hold him away from me to let him finish, cue soggy ride home and a relieved cat! :cat::cat: Every time we pass that spot I think of him and it makes me smile! Maybe I'm weird but I just found it funny at the time! And it's one funny memory for me to always have.
Was a complete one off I guess because he was being poked and prodded and he held as long as he could.
 
If this is a contest I want in. When it's a human and not a cat, the names have been changed to protect the innocent. "Stop the car, I need to go. No, not here I hate this store. Sorry, too late". Just picture me ever so gently checking the passenger seat for dampness.

Could be worse I guess. I had an adult (old) relative with cognitive issues, and just plain stubborn. They had incontinence issues. Refused to wear adult diapers. As a result their car seat (cloth) had been peed on (by the human adult) multiple times. I always brought a plastic garbage bag to sit on.

...from that I learned to respect the future "youngins" that will be taking care of me when I get old. And I promise to not get cranky.
 
Kind of humiliating for some seniors buying diapers in bulk at the store. Most people don't stare know, the bloom will come off your rose one day too. I also dread becoming a cranky old man, much prefer the crazy uncle role. No Buick blando-mobile for me, beige with beige interior.
