Charlie. :cat:

He was on DCIN at the Pinellas County Humane Society. They found out he was diabetic during their labwork when he was surrendered to the shelter because his owner has medical conditions and could not care for him any more. According to the shelter, they have been able to control his glucose level through diet alone. I will know if that is true when I start testing him. He has a little muscle waste on his back legs so I suspect he may have early neuropathy. If he does need insulin he will start on Semglee.

He is a sweetie. I met Ali from the shelter about half way to Jacksonville and he talked the whole way home. :D He is set up in the spare bedroom and immediately made himself at home. He found the catnip toys and started playing with them.

After watching Charlie move, I do suspect that he does have some neuropathy. It has been a few years since I needed to give Methyl B12 to a cat and am going to order it from
Vitacost. Is this the correct dose I need to get? Vitacost Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin -- 5000 mcg - 60 Capsules - Vitacost Is it one or two a day that he needs?
I give mine once a day. Not sure where you’re located, but I got these from Amazon. They’re capsules, so I didn’t have to crush anything.

The Zobaline for cats is 3000mcg with a dose of once per day but B-12 is a water soluble vitamin so it doesn't matter if you give more. Any the body can't use just gets peed out. Depending on how much powder is inside the capsule, you could either give it all once a day or split it into two or more meals.

Lisa, what a gorgeous boy Charlie is! I want to reach into the computer and give him a big hug!
And what a lucky fellow to have you to care for him! I’m looking forward to hearing all about him.

He is a sweetie. Unfortunately after testing last night and this morning, I found he is not diet controlled :(

I will be starting him on 1/2 unit of Semglee this morning and setting up his spreadsheet later today.

Such a bright looking fella. Sorry to hear that diet wasn't taking care of FD. I'm sure you suspected this would be the case. He's lucky to have found a human that obviously has been here before and aware of what they are getting into. Lucky Charlie and lucky you. He looks like a Charlie. Best of luck

Lisa-

Keep in mind that there may. be some degree of stress in a new environment. I'm not sure how long Charlie has been with you but he may not have quite acclimated. Of course, the stress may have thrown him out of remission. You know the drill but I'd go cautiously in case his numbers are up due solely from stress.

I know. That is why I did not start insulin last night. This morning his BG was a little higher with no food so I started with 1/2 unit and will be checking him through the day. Based on other signs such as extreme hunger, lost weight, muscle loss and early neuropathy, I don't think he was really diet controlled. I asked for copies of his glucose readings since he was initially diagnosed and none were included with his paperwork. I suspect they were not really testing him.

I have set up his spreadsheet. Can someone test the link and let me know if it is not working?

I used the Vitacost brand, you can get the 100 qty for 14.49 just tap on their drop down.
One per day , Just sprinkle it on his wet food, no taste at all, I saw an improvement in about 2 months once I got Tyler regulated, He started jumping up on things again, 100% better.
He's been in remission since 1-24-21

Lisa,
This makes me very smiley! Your lucky Charlie also looks like my loving but obnoxiously silly 14 yr old Al:cat:
So very glad you have the knowledge to care for this young sweetie. Many blessings and health prayers - eat well and prosper, Charlie:bighug:

He is making himself at home. He knows there are other cats here but he doesn't seem to be bothered much by them. He hisses a little, but does not act aggressively towards them. Right now he is still confined to the spare bedroom and I am waiting for signs that he is ready to get out and explore.
