I think Buca may be constipated...

When I picked him up today and my hand brushed past his bottom I felt a very slight bump. I looked at his bottom and he seems to be very slightly protruding like something is ready to come out. I'm not sure how much is normal, and I'm watching him to see if maybe it's just something he's working on and it's not ready yet. I'm not sure how much of that could be just normal and nothing to worry about.

I also noticed that his stool has been slightly more soft than usual, but he has been on an all wet food diet so I figured that it would look different, but I also noticed a couple of pieces outside the litter box. Not sure if they just stuck to him and came off as he was leaving the litter box or if he actually went outside the litter box...

I'm wondering what could be a fix for this in the very beginning stages that I can do at home. I haven't had the support of my vet choosing Lantus and an all wet food diet. Of course I'll take him in if it's life threatening, I would just rather try a few things at home first, if I have indeed caught this early on.... I've added water to his usual meals this evening, and will continue to watch him and see if he still looks like he has something to push out. I know cats can be very very sensitive to our OTC remedies. Anything out there I can try that won't spike his numbers ?

You can use Miralax. The dose is 1/8 teaspoon up to twice a day. It is recommended to mix the powder into water first to dissolve it and then mix it into the canned food.

miralax is found here in our wal mart stores, I am sure you can get it in canada. It's found in the pharmacy area, close to where you would find fiber tablets and stuff like that.

Canadian pharmacies should have it. It's in the aisle with the over the counter constipation remedies and fiber supplements.

Canned pumpkin will also work. I don't think you want the pumpkin pie filling type, just regular canned pumpkin that has no other ingredient.

The generic name is polyethylene glycol 3350 or PEG 3350. In some countries it is sold as Movicol or SoftLax. Your pharmacist should be able to point you to it.

OK thanks!

I think he's ok... I've been feeling his abdomen area regularly and there is no discomfort, and I cleaned the litter box and there is stool in there again...

Does pumpkin really work? It has the opposite effect on dogs because we use that on our dog if he has diarrhea. Gets him back to proper "form" in a jiffy :-D

Miralax is called RestoraLAX in Canada. White container with purple label in the drug store.

Pumpkin does work- just not fast.

Mirilax was faster for Sneakers and she gets 1/8 tsp everyday mixed in her evening food.

I feel relieved... followed him to the litter box where he had a nice long pee (so I know he likely won't have a recurrance of struvit crystals if he keeps that up), and a good solid um "movement" lol . I slept like a baby last night now that I don't have to worry... I just keep mixing water in with his wet food. I will get the miralax just to have on hand. ;-)

I am glad Buca is peeing and pooping normally. I just wanted to mention that Miralax is an osmotic, it draws water into the colon to soften stool. However, it will not help the hard plug thats already in there. You may want to just give an 1/8th tsp of miralax in his watered down food anyway as a regular preventive because once it is hard and formed the Miralax wont help that, only the forming stool.

Pumpkin can help some cats and yes it can be used for both constipation and diarrhea, however it is fiber, and cats digestion wasnt designed for a lot of fiber, so what happens is it bulks up the stool so theres more of it to pass, and if a cat is having trouble passing it anyway you really dont want MORE  Also, its not the pie filling its the unsweetened and some cats just wont eat it.

Good to know, thanks for the advice! I always keep canned pure pumpkin on hand for the dog,so no worries there ;-)
I may get the miralax as a preventative then.... would you recommend that daily or a couple times a week sort of thing?

Sneakers gets hers daily (unless I forget or can't find the bottle I just bought  ). To start with she was getting 1/8 tsp BID, now it is just once a day for maintenance.

I personally think it works best every day, but start maybe once a day and see if it helps. Obviously if there are still problems you can go up to 1/4 tsp.

Thanks!

He's been ok so far... he's been on just wet food for almost two months now and I've been watching him.... for a little while there I couldn't catch him in the litter box so I was worried. This will be a good step to take as a preventative measure, though. Thanks for the info :-D
