Hello, all! I've been posting on and off on the Lantus board, but never did my first official post here (argh). Max and I started this marathon back at the end of April, and it has been a bumpy one. I have actually trained for and ran in half marathons, and I think those were easier than this! Like many vets, ours has limited knowledge but at least knows that Lantus is good insulin for cats. Having this all go down during COVID has been anything but fun - nothing like learning how to test and shoot a cat by watching the vet tech do it from 6 feet away. Max sat perfectly still for the ear stick with her, but at home, he was a totally different cat (he got the new nickname, Cujo Cat).
Our vet doesn't ask for home testing aside from once every few days, so I got very little support from him or the tech. I researched and finally begged to have a FreeStyle Libre sensor put on Max, and the vet agreed. We had 12 glorious days of readings that were easy for both of us and gave me a ton of information. I went back to ear sticks with more confidence, and had one okay week, then Cujo Cat returned. Since then we have tried another Libre (my daughter and I attached it using info I got from the FDMB Facebook group). That one only lasted 6 days, but ear sticks are more consistent (although not any easier). I have yet to jump totally to a human meter as the AlphTrak needs so little blood (often I only get a little after multiple ear sticks), but when I get a good blood drop (ears are slooooooowly learning to bleed), I test him with the AT first and then my human meter (gave up on the ReliOn after too many error codes and am happy with the new Contour).
Max is used to sitting in high numbers and likes to bounce on me anytime his BG gets to a nice number. Switched recently from SLGL to TR in the hopes I can get him regulated. I keep reminding myself it's a marathon, not a sprint. Well, a novel as usual...short and sweet is not in my vocabulary. A big thank you to the members here who have helped me already on the Lantus board! I'd be lost without you all!
