Until yesterday things have been going good . Bobbie's sugars are good and controlled by diet, she is feeling well and acting like her old self. I've been very busy with life and work and have kept up with DCIN via Facebook.

Fri. had Bobbie's brother, Judah at the vet with a UTI. He was worse yesterday so we went for an emergency visit. Not only was there lots of infection in his urine, there was also sugar.... he stayed to get the UTI under control The vet was going to start him on insulin(they use humulin :( ) I am worried about leavinvg him alone with him being started on insulin... he was only at 178 but had eaten almost nothing in the prior 24 hours.

Am thinking we will get him home and begin testing 4 times a day for 2 weeks to see what his levels will be and go from there. if he is still high I will be getting advice from you experts and putting him on a better insulin...but for now am praying he will be controlled by diet like his sister is...

it sounds like your kitties are in good hands. you have been vigilent and they are benefiting from it. good luck!

You are hugged.
Remember a dx of dire beasties is'nt the worst thing. You can do it. And remember how it forms such a tighter bond with you and your sugar kitty.
Still, hoping their is no lasting sugar problem with your darling Judah.

I understand you're looking for cyberhugs ((((((Becky)))))) but I wanted to let you know there's a possibility Judah had higher than normal BGs because of the stress from the infection, not necessarily full blown diabetes, although having sugar in his urine is concerning.

I'm not sure if they did this or not, but it is highly recommended to have a culture and sensitivity test performed on the urine (needs to be sent out to a lab) to determine exactly which bacteria is involved so they can use the best anti-biotic for it, instead of throwing whichever AB at it they "think" will do the job. Dr. Lisa has written about this countless times because she loathes the use of ABs when they are not needed and rightly so. She has a whole article about urinary health for cats http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth.

If they did not run a C&S, it doesn't mean he doesn't have infection, he probably does, but finding the best AB to treat it is what's important.

Hope this info is helpful and you can get Judah on the road to recovery. It sounds like you've done an excellent job for Bobbie, so I have faith you can do the same for his brother. :YMHUG:

((((((((BECKY))))))) Consider yourself hugged!!!

Hopefully, Judah will only need a short stint on insulin while that nasty infection clears up and it isn't like you haven't done this all before.

Very tight cyber hug.... and nodding head with others.. you can do this.... I just tripped over the poem I wrote for my sweet Charlie, several months after his DX with diabetes.... My boy was dx at 12 and went to the bridge at 18+ from a blood clot in his brain.... My sweet boy.... (I just cannot ad the GA to his name)..

I’m A Cat
©2004 by Carol Notermann

I’m a cat, and I have attitude, at least that’s what I’m told.
But last year, didn’t feel too well, but not because I’m old.
I was just a little tired, really hungry, thirsty all the time.
I’m not old you understand, but a little past my prime.

I used to take such great delight in chasing everything.
But for a while, I simply watched when Mommy played with string.
My Mommy took me to the vet, and really seemed quite scared.
The words he said upset her, but I’m so glad she cared.

She came home and told our family that things would have to change.
She’s moved their food to way up high. It’s past my jumping range.
And now she’s giving me, in my own dish, a different type of food
I sniffed, it didn’t smell the same, I showed my attitude.

But Mommy sat and talked to me. She explained the reasons why
So I’ll make her very happy, and I’ll eat it and not cry.
And then she went on line and looked up a bunch of things
She found a site, she likes a lot, that comfort to her brings.

It’s called FDMB, whatever that could mean.
And since she’s found those people, her smile again does beam.
I’m getting shots and blood tests, and trying to be good.
Cause when she says I’m better, she always knocks on wood.

There’s this thing that’s called a” h*n*ym**n” that she so wants to see
But prays that I can regulate, whatever that may be
She says she’ll just keep keeping on and I should not be afraid
She cuddles me and pets me lots, when in her lap I’ve laid.

I’m a cat, and I have attitude, at least that’s what I’m told.
But now I feel much better, as I told you, I’m not old.
In fact, I look so pretty now, my coat a shinny one
I think today, I owe myself, a long nap in the sun.

(The little cat lies sleeping, in his spot right in the sun
His Mommy’s on FDMB, and talks to everyone.
And Mommy baked a catnip cake, to celebrate year one!)

My brave boy left us on August 5th, 2009.... Spunky joined him on October 2, 2011.... My loves are together....

Thanks. I knew I could come here for some hugs and support.....looking back, I should have seen the signs....he stopped playing soccer with his favorite balls. But he's 5 and I chalked it up to middle age. He's always had a big appetite...but has been drinking and peeing large amounts...but he's a big guy-19lbs...not fat just a big 'ol yellow cat..and he's always drank more water than most kitties...he hasn't acted like he doesn't feel well, hasn't lost weight...

Vicki- the vet said exactly what you said in the first sentence of your post. He also said that Judah is one of those neutered males that is always going to be prone to UTIs-cthis isn't the first one..I suppose I need to be greatful that because of this UTI the sugar was caught before he got as sick as Bobbie got- we almost lost her.
Thanks for the hugs and encouragement. I'll update when I talk to the vet tomorrow morning.
