What ever happened to humulin L (lente)?

According to the drug companies it was discontinued to to lack of sales. So what did they replace it with?? Lantis and Levimir...two insulins that are supposed to have the same duration....but at about 10X the cost! Unfortunately, neither one work well in felines.

NPH, lente, and ultralente, as far as i know had a proven track record, and far better storage stability then the new "improved" insulins.

Is there a way we can group together and start a movement to try to get lente insulin back on the market??

Think about it..it even would make sense from a human standpoint. If medicare could save about $100 a month times every person on medicare using insulin we could be saving millions of taxpayer money!

Lantus and Levermir are both excellent insulin for felines. We have lots of cats that have gone into remission on both insulins.

My own sugarcat was a Lantus user. I highly recommend it in felines. In fact so do most of the current veterinary journals on treating feline diabetes. So not sure where you got your info that it doesn't work well for felines.

I have no experience with L, but I also have a diabetic kitty that went into remission after using Lantus. My other diabetic just switched to Levemir this past weekend and is doing great!

Hi there

L and U were great insulins and many of us were very upset when they were discontinued years ago. N is still around but really not good for cats.

I'm not certain what you've heard about lantus and levemir but they are great insulins. while more expensive to buy, typically cats require smaller doses than the humulins and work pretty well in cats, much better than many other alternatives (N, caninsulin/vetsulin and even PZI).

Is there some other way we can help?

Rather than getting the 10ml vial of Lantus or Levimer....get the cartridge/pens.

Each cartridge/pen holds 3ml. You open one at a time, and can usually use it to
the last drop instead of tossing out most of the 10ml vial.

It's more expensive up front, because you buy 5 3ml cartridges at a time. But
less expensive in the long run.

Hi Tomkitten,

I was started on L (Lente) in 1977, and it was a great insulin. In the late 80's, my Joslin Diabetes physician switched me to U (ultralente), and it was the best control I have had in my 34 years on insulin.

The pharmaceuticals discontinued all of the beef/pork insulins because they could make the RNA based insulins Much cheaper - pure and simple. If you think it is hard to find a good insulin for cats, you wouldn't believe the transition for humans like me to the newer insulins. I still can't regain the control I had with U, even with a pump! Not particularly enamored of pharmaceutical companies and their ethics.

Lantus is what all 6 of my diabetic cats are using. I use the Lantus cartridges and draw the insulin with regular 3/10, 31 gauge short needle syringes.

So good luck with a choice in insulins. Note ProZinc, although designed for cats, is still recombinant human dna.
