I need help figuring out what to feed Stewie. He has been getting Blue Buffalo and Dr elyseys canned food. Lately he’s been really low in the mornings and higher at night. He gets 1 unit Prozinc every 12 hours except when he’s too low. I have been testing him at home.

Tonight I tested him at 6 pm he was 178. I fed him blue Buffalo 3/4 can but he didn’t eat it all. I gave him 1 unit Prozinc at 6:15. At 8 pm he was 102. And 100 at 9pm- I tried to give him the rest of his food but he wouldn’t eat it.

I test him every morning and night and switch every other kind of food. Is one of the foods better than the other?

Hi there!

It could be that he is bored with that food. Cats like humans get tired of the same food--even if you switch it up between brands.

Have you considered FF, or Friskies pate, or Nulo? Nulo is a little more pricier, but also very low in carbs.

I use to feed my cat Blue and Hill's, as I assumed that was the best. In fact, I was apprehensive to even switch to FF, and Friskies in the beginning.

Have you started a spreadsheet? I don't see one linked in your signature. Glad you are testing daily.

@Kris & Teasel @Rachel @StephG @Djamila might have more tips and suggestions.

Hi Whitney! Here is the link for getting started on a spreadsheet.

And here is some information about how to read the different columns:

Once you get it set up and input whatever data you have so far, we would love to take a look and see if we can help you figure out what's going on! Please let us know if you have any trouble getting it set up, or have questions about what to put where. It can be a little confusing at first, and there are some folks who are great at tech support if you need it. It might also be helpful to click on some of our spreadsheets so you can see what it looks like. We all have them linked in our signatures (the blue text).

Hey Whitney! As long as the food you feed is below 10% carbs, you should be fine. Back when I fed commercial food, I did Friskies for a long time...then I switched to Wellness and eventually Tiki Cat.

As Djamila said, we can probably help you figure out what's going on with his BG levels too...we'd be happy to take a look!
