15 year old Tasha has been doing fine with her diabetes. Has been off insulin for years and has great numbers. However she has been losing weight this past year and the vet did some blood work and every came out great so she suspects either cancer or heart disease as she also has a slight heart murmur. She is a petite cat to begin with and went from 7.2 pounds to 6.2 pounds in a year. What I need is a high calorie low carb food. I am giving her Fancy Feast turkey and giblets which is 97 calories per 3 oz. can. When I checked Binky's list all the high calorie low carb foods (mostly foods like Sophisticat or Friskies Kitten formula) are no longer made. There are a lot of new kitten foods out there, but I have no nutritional info on them. Binky's list is just so old and many of the items are gone or have changed. Can anyone please help us out. Thanks.

It's way down on page 29 of the new food list. It looks like it's 9% carbs on this list. Maybe because it's now called IAMS Maximum Calorie plus.

You can give some of your regular food, and some Max Cal to give a calorie boost.

Yes I saw that, but I haven't given Tasha anything that was so high in carbs. I have kept her at about 4% and under (mostly under) and she has done so well, but perhaps I should reconsider. I was a bit put off as it is for both dogs and cats and it has beets in it and I wondered is a root veggie was a great choice for a diabetic cat. Is that something that I have to order from the vet? I haven't seen it in the stores. I was going to try EVO 95% Duck as that is 237 calories for the same weight ans is only 5% carbs. Do you know anything about Instinctive choice? That is 226 carbs for 6 oz and essentially 0% carbs as it is less than 1 % carbs as it is only .29%. That is all higher than the 182-194 calories she has been getting daily. As my cat doesn't have a great appetite, it would be something I would substitute for all her meals if it were to make enough of a difference.

Please see the chart on catinfo.org - here is the link

food list

It is updated regularly.
Thanks. I have looked at this chart. Several of the items that would have fit the bill well, are no longer being made. Such as the Eukanuba Kitten - Entrée with Gourmet Chicken.

For animals:
Fat has 8.5 calories per gram
Protein has 3.5 calories per gram
Carbohydrate has 3.5 calories per gram

If you go for higher fat, that may help with weight gain.

Thanks. That is what I am trying to do. Trouble is she also has to like it and Tashat has never cared that much about eating. Even before she was diabetic.

Maybe try the Wellness brands - they seem to have higher fat levels.

I checked into Wellness and they have veggies and starch (potato) in them even tough there are no grains and I don't feel good about that in regards to managing her diabetes. Perhaps I will give it a go if all else fails.

I did eventually try the IAMS maximum calories and she wouldn't touch it. Right now I am mixing 1/4 tsp of canola oil into her food. She is eating Life's Abundance Instinctive Choice on and off. That has virtually no carbs and is 113 calories a small 3 oz can. She at least will eat that most/some of the time. I tried a sample of the Young Again zero carb dry food just to see if she would eat it and she attacked it but it is so very low calorie. Sometimes I give her a little rather than have her not eat anything at all.
Thank you all so much for your help ! I appreciate all the suggestions and if anyone still has any more I would love to hear them.

They are low carb because the concentration of those other ingredients is minimal ... like what might be found in a mouse.

See the chart at Cat info.

Since my last post, Tasha no longer eats Life's Abundance. However, I have found that adding 1/4 teaspoon of canola oil to half a can of the fancy feast she usually likes may be doing the trick. It is upping her calories while still keeping low carbs.
Thanks again to everyone for your suggestions.
