Hello! My name is Chyanne , my 12 or 13 year old kittie is named Dude , I rescued him so not exactly sure on his age. Dude has been an insulin dependant cat for The last almost 2 years I think or getting very close to 2 years.. and I'm worried he is going down hill :( my main question is I just lost my job and I have no money to get new test strips to check his sugar, does anyone know of a place I could get some free or somewhere cheaper then ebay? I use the Alpha Trax 2 test kit
 
I checked unfortunately none there :/ that you ! I'm considering trying the freestyle test strips I've been reading that they might be able to be used with my Meterm for him

Hi there! I just started using the freestyle lite strips in my alphatrak 2 meter and it's been working great. Its not as accurate, but close enough for me. I tried a few side by side comparisons with the alphatrak strips and the with the same drop of blood it's been very close (within 20 points) almost everytime. You should try some comparisons yourself to see how much it varies for you. The alphatrak meter is great but the strips are way too expensive. I plan to keep a box of the alphatrak strips on hand for any emergencies when I need complete accuracy, otherwise the freestyle have been working well for me and are much cheaper. Best of luck!
 
Actually your cheapest option, and what most on this board do, is go to Walmart and get a relion micro or confirm meter... ($17)
A box of 100 test strips is just $36.
 
I also use the FS Lite strips in my AT2 meter and have for over 2 1/2 years. When I first started I did at least 50 side by side same drop comparisons and found the results to be very close with the FS Lite strips. I have also done comparisons with my AT2 meter with FS lite strips and the vet blood analysis and had good comparisons. If you do decide to use the FS Lite strips it would be prudent to do some comparison tests so that you are comfortable with the results. Also leave the coding on the AT2 meter at the last cat code listed on your AT2 strip container.


ETA Also since I am in Canada and can't get the relion meter, I also have a FS Lite meter (given free with purchase of test strips) so I have a back up human meter I can use as well. As @Case said it is a good idea to keep a container of AT2 strips on hand if you are ever unsure about a reading you get.

That's my only problem at the moment is I am completely out of the AT2 strips and can't afford to grt them at this time so so hoping I could use the FS strips and get a decent reading to see how he is doing. Also what kind of food do you guys feed yours ? He's been eating friskies mostly the salmon one and a couple other fish ones but he doesn't really like to eat it all the time cause I feel he misses dry food he will eat usually about a half a can day and night and then gets his shot of 2 units of insulin

Most of us feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate. Careful about feeding too much seafood.
 
Well I get the friskies pate kind , just the salmon flavor and other ocean fish flavors cause someone told me the ones with cheese will raise his sugar to much
 
Do you free feed your cats ? I was told to give him a can at night and a can in the morning and check his sugar like once a week and adjust if needed , but I had someone else tell me they free fed with dry food cause her cat knew when it's sugar was low and needed to eat... I'm so confused I just want him to feel better

There are only a few dry foods that are OK to leave out. I actually do leave out young again zero carb and Dr Elseys clean protein dry and fed wet twice a day. BUT, if I only did wet food I would still feed a mid day snack and a snack just before bed. Most people on the board feed several small meals a day rather than just two big meals. Just no food at least 2 hours prior to the preshot tests.

For testing we advocate at MINIMUM folks test just before the shot to make sure it is a shootable number. Ideally you would then also get at least 1 miss cycle number to see how low the dose takes you. Dr's would never in a million years suggest that a person be injected without testing first.... For me my pets are family and it's the best way to keep them safe.
