Midnight deffinately has all the signs of being diabetic however he never has had any issues until the uti a year ago. He is about 5 1/2 Male and Neutered. Strong as an Ox and his physical Last yr he weighed 22 pounds. Then the UTI because I saw he was havin trouble peeing but after treated for UTI it came back and after culters and blood work it revealed bacterial enterococcus which vet said he apparantly had for yrs. I only came into the cats lives two yrs ago . Well she ordered Clavanox antibiotic for 4 weeks and he stopped on 2/29 and now she will be here on 3/7 to reculture and see whats end results. She mentioned trace of diabetes but a month ago it didnt even register until a week ago he started eating constantly and peeing and whining like he was starving and had no clue why but so far he has not even gotten started on medications ect so being that he is constantly hungry and also he lost weight as well what should I be giving him to make things safer for most part till the vet get here. Here is what he likes as only two yrs ago I started to introduce him to wet food and the other three cats eat wet and dry but he was fussy but what he loves is
I had him on the prescription dry food for over a year and now as of laast week he wont eat it so I bought The dry foodFriskies Grillers becuz he is starving.
I also have treats the lil tuna snacks in catfood aisle . I change the water at least 3 times a day to make sure its cold. I change his kitty box constantly and I have increased his normal food day from 1 can medley in am and one at dinner to 2 in am and in dinnertime plus the snacks. what can do or buy that will relieve some of his discomfort? TYSM for all your advice
Midnight is blessed to have such a loving and caring momma.
The Fancy Feast classic patés (e.g. the turkey & giblets one above) are popular low carb foods with US members. The ones with gravy have too many carbs.
Here is a shortcut list of commercial low-carb canned foods to get you started:
Measure how much water you put out for Midnight.Fill the bowl and weigh it, then weigh it again before you empty it. The difference will give you a rough guide to how much Midnight is drinking. If the volume of water drunk reduces then it will give you some sort of indication that the low carb food is helping Midnight's BG levels to come down a bit.
If you're home most of the time, it may help take some of the load off Midnight's pancreas if you feed him the same amount but in smaller, more frequent meals (less for the pancreas to handle all at once and it might do some little bit to help even out his BG over the course of the day).
Hopefully other members will be along soon to suggest other things you might be able to do till the vet comes.
Hello, Tracey... and welcome! Assuming that Midnight is actually diabetic, and after checking out the pictures of food choices that he likes, I'd say the only good choice is the FF Chicken Feast Classic. Any of the classic paté varieties of FF are good choices, as they are lower in carbohydrates. Although most kitties love the gravy varieties, they're high in carbs and are a "no-no" for diabetic cats. We pretty much only feed them when an insulin-dependent cat's BG numbers go too low... hypoglycemia. The gravy gets the numbers to rise quickly, reducing the life-threatening dangers of hypo. The links provided by @Larry and Kitties and @Critter Mom will be most helpful to you. As for the tuna snacks from the cat food aisle, they might not be a good choice for a diabetic kitty. Here's a link to a treat that might work better for Midnight. They're freeze-dried and low-carb, and they work well for both cats and dogs. I break them into small pieces for my sugar kitty, Hannah. I hope Midnight starts feeling better very soon. Best wishes.
