My cat, Nicky, has been on 3units of Prozinc twice a day for about a year now. He is on all wet food, fancy feast pate. He eats about 3 1/2 cans a day. Around 9-10 oz wet food. A year ago his fructosamine taken at the vet was “fair”. So at home, while monitoring him, I gradually increased his Prozinc to 3F, then after a few weeks to 3.25, after a few more weeks to 3.5, twice daily. I increased it at suggestion of the vet, but did it gradually, did it slowly. Once he was on 3.5u twice a day over a few weeks, went back to vet and she said the fructosamine was worse! Did a home glucose curve and saw that at nadir my cat’s blood sugar dropped too low—to about 60. Vet said drop the dose back to 3U twice daily. Did this immediately and did spot checks after that. Nicky seemed fine not a lot of urinating, water drinking, was active and alert. Went back to vet a week ago and again, the fructosamine was fair and they recommended increasing the Prozinc back up to 3.5 U twice a day and do home glucose curve. Being cautious because of what happened last time, I only increased the Prozinc to 3.25u not 3.5 u as vet recommended. Got some ok readings at first but today when doing home glucose curve I see the numbers are worse and too high, although going down. I’m wondering if my cat needs to be maintained on 3U and closely monitor food intake because possibly the insulin increase is too high once it’s increased over 3U and he may be getting a drop in middle of night. I’m supposed to send the vet Nicky’s glucose curve tomorrow. I’m sure they will say to increase the Prozinc based on poor numbers. (She actually wanted me to put him on 4u twice daily up from 3U). I’m wondering if I should drop Nicky back to 3U and do a new glucose curve in 7 days. My cat has not lost or gained weight all year he’s steady at 18.5 pounds and is 9 years old. He’s been diabetic past 5 years. He has no underlying health issues except diabetes and his bloodwork is normal except for high sugar. I’m not sure what’s going on at this point and not confident in advise I get from vet. Would appreciate any guidance. Sorry this post so long. Thank you.
