Thumper is ok, she's not moving around as much as usual but she's also getting bupe. She goes for her 1st laser treatment tomorrow & I'm going to write a note so DH will remember to ask about the acccupuncture.

On another note, one of my civvies, Josie has had some kind of ongoing skin trouble. At times she has broken out with bumps on her ears & she scratches at them & makes it bleed. She has also had some hard lumps under her mouth, the chin area. The old vet at one point checked for ringworm (when it was just the ears) and has given her a steriod injection at least once. I'm always on the look out for a vet closer to me & noticed an ad about a new clinic opening. I did some research & on their website & they listed a link to FDMB. I also read a lot of good things about this vet. I decided to keep Thumper & Callie at the current vet 45 mins away. I also decided to check out the closer vet with one of the civvies, Josie happened to be the first one that needed anything. A couple of weeks ago her chin broke out again so DD took her to the close vet & they gave her some kind of spray saying to use it for a week & if it didn't work to come back. I'm still wondering what the heck is causing it. I wasn't able to take her but it sounds like they were saying some kind of skin infection. Well, the other day I noticed another hard lump but this time it's at the very corner of her mouth & it looks red & almost like a scab but no oozing or anything like that. So...DH takes her back today & they say this is something different. They had mentioned last time she needed her teeth cleaned, geez she's not even 3 yet but DH did say her teeth look bad. The vet says he thinks her tooth/teeth are bothering her & she has been scratching at it & has caused an infection. OMG.....never ever in a million years did I think about infection & them giving her an antibiotic. IDK why I just wasn't thinking at all I guess. Since it's an new vet I had never mentioned no Metcam or Convenia. I'm just sick about it but guess what....he gave her a Convenia injection. I could just die, nothing to do now but wait. He also said she needed a dental which I really don't have a problem with but I'm now concerned about putting her under anesthesia with this in her system. Anyone here have any experience with Convenia? Should I wait awhile on the dental now? It's just one thing after another.

If I recall correctly, the Convenia is supposed to stay in their system 10-14 days. The antibiotic comes in in a single dose shot. The down side, as you are aware, is if the cat has a reaction. A regular AB is in/out of their system in 12 hours. If it doesn't work, or they have a reaction, it's just one dose. Many people on this board, mostly unknowingly, have had a cat receive the injection, me included. For some cats that can't be pilled and refuse the oral liquid meds or tainted food, it is an only choice. Personally my guys not had any reactions to it.

I would wait at least 2 weeks before pursuing the teeth. Maybe throw in an extra week. Meanwhile, I'd see what, if any, topical I could put on it - however - with it so close to her mouth, the options may be limited. Anyone know of one that won't hurt the cat if it is licked/ingested?

Hi Barbara, I posted on 3/16 "Junior, Made bad decision"...... because he was given a shot of Convenia. Everyone who responded had their cats with or without knowing injected with no problems. Check it out. Junior was given it for urination issues, I thought that was all it was for?

Junior has had issues with scabs and scratching inside his ears on and off forever. All the vets over the years never thought anything of it. He goes outside and is constantly rolling in dirt so I just figured it was "nature". He is also a little OCD.

Bumps under the chin, are they like black scabs? My civvie, Johnny has one all the time and is always scratching. He was at the vet recently at the vet for herpes, she brought it up and I said he goes outside, figured it was just something from being in the "wilderness" and he gets them in different spots from time to time. Junior has a bad habit of slightly beating Johnny up from time to time as well. She mentioned it could be something else that needs to be addressed, but did not elaborate. I was more in shock about the herpes dx.

Basically, I have no advice but you got me more focused on the issue now. Hopefully we'll figure it out together

Laura

Oooooooh, sorry bout the shot! I'm sure it'll be okay, seems like a lot of cats don't have any problem....must remember to mention that for my charts when I go in next. Hope your kitties feel better soon, sorry bout the bad luck with vets.

*kitten had black crud on the chin and around the mouth for awhile, it turned out to be feline acne!

Johnny also has blackheads under his lower lip. She didn't suggest anything to put on them, it's caused mostly from drinking out of plastic water dishes. Even though, they both have been drinking out of stainless and just before his visit i bought them one of those fancy plastic water fountains ohmygod_smile

I just googled "feline acne" and all kinds o stuff comes up describing it. It really sounds like Johnny, and possibly Josie's? I cannot figure out how to post and share links on this....... laptop_smiley i am not!!!!!!!!

Barbara, Henry had a Covenia shot once before I knew about the risk. (Found out about here). He had slight diarrhea the day afterward that cleared up. I'm sure she'll be ok. Its rare for a serious reaction to occur, but if your cat is one that it occurs in the problem is it takes 2 weeks to clear the system. The Covenia does not work well for UTIs.
Henry had what you are describing with the bumps starting back in October and its recurred several times. Vet thinks its some type of allergic reaction either topical or to food. He then scratched at them and developed a bacterial infection in the bumps. He took Cipro and I applied an antibacterial eye ointment on them. Vet said it being on his face above eye and around ears it was only safe to use this instead of Neosporin. What you describe with the little black bumps sounds like feline acne. I just read something yesterday that said that in some cats that are prone to allergic skin reactions and feline acne, drinking out of a plastic water dish or self waterer or feeder can make them have an allergic reaction.
Something else that will help skin eruptions and wounds that is safe is chickweed salve. You can usually only get it from natural medicine stores and some health food stores. Unless you want to make your own with common chickweed and beeswax. Very effective in healing wounds, acne, scrapes, etc. in humans and pets. I'm using some on Henry now for some bumps on his ear.

I talked to someone today whose dog has been receiving the laser treatments and she said she could really start seeing some difference after about the fourth one.
Good luck tomorrow Thumper! I still would try the accupuncture if vet thinks its ok.

I had a really detailed post earlier, but somehow it blipped off the computer when it didn't upload quickly. Anyways, since the Convenia is supposed to stay in their systems for 14 or so days, I'd wait at least 3 weeks to do the dental. It's unfortunate they don't all come with a detailed schedule, but when that starts to happen, I'll probably be long gone!

Most of your other questions were answered, so I'll keep this one short.

Good luck tomorrow - and keep us tuned in. BTW: Once a PZIer, always home at PZI!

Sorry about the Covenia shot, hate when they do something without asking first
good luck with Thumper today
I am sure that all will go well!

Good Luck with the laser treatment!

Well, you know there is not much I have not experienced in the feline treatment world!!!!! Kitty had two convenia shots last year, before I could get it completely understood at the vet's office that Convenia and Metacam are not options. I was very concerned about a possible reaction to the Convenia, but she did fine! Just keep Thumper monitored and watch for any signs of anemia--pale gums etc. If you see any amemic signs developing-- take her back. I am sure Thumper will be fine!

Laser treatment has done wonders for humans medically & cosmetically. I know that for humans depending on the area it can take alot of treatments. In humams some areas can take 10-12+ laser treatments. I am sure your vet has already told to it could take a alot treatments. Be patient don't give up after 5.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. Kim is right, keep an eye on her gums and nose, if they start to look pale get her back to the Vet.

Let us know how today went.
