I received my BG testing equipment and now I don't know what the acceptable level is. I got Pitton and got a sample and it came in at 44, I THINK. I didn't want to keep pricking her and I wasn't sure what the best range was. Can someone please give me some assistance?

Thanks!
Lisa

The location under her username says MN so the 44 is mg/dl (US).

Lisa, 44 mg/dl is a low blood glucose level for a diabetic cat.

Normal non-diabetic cat blood glucose levels is around 60 mg/dl to 150 mg/dl.

Was insulin given today? If so, how many hours before you got the 44 and how many units of insulin was given? What insulin is your cat on?

Please read the hypo reference sheet so you know how to treat such a low number: http://felinediabetes.com/hypogly.htm Corn syrup and honey will work to raise a low blood glucose level. Keep testing the bg level every half hour or more. Be prepared to take your cat to the vet/vet ER for treatment if the number keeps dropping depsite home treatment.

44 is one of those iffy numbers, if the cat had insulin and is still dropping then yes, it is hypo. If not it is just a beautiful non-diabetic number.

Squeem- Out of 11 cats 10 civies and 1 OTJ diabetic I never see numbers in the 60s. Max is routinely in the low to mid 40s with his high end in the low 50s, same with the civies. Non-diabetic numbers are between 40-100. ( Yes, I do test my civies).

Hi, I dropped in to see if I could help, but there isn't much information and Lisa hasn't been on in a few hours. I'll check back in a little bit.

HI Tuckers Mom,

No, after finding out 4 and 4 was to much, I weaned her down to 2 and 2. I hadn't given insulin for awhile and was getting ready to do just that when I tested. I only gave her one unit after that test. Now my problem is, I am basically out of Humlin and would like to switch to a better insulin like lantus. Should I just call my vet and have her fill that one or how do I get it? It will be the weekend and I will run out of insulin :!:

Lisa

I would just call the vet now and make them write a prescription. You take it to your regular pharmacy. Perhaps others can chime in here, but I was given the vials and they didn't last long, I think most people request the pens or cartridges.
