I called the vet and scheduled Sam's dental. Earliest they had was May 9th, but that's okay. It's still plenty of time before my trip at the end of May so I'll be able to monitor him and see how it does after. The vet wants me to give him half his usual food and half his insulin dose before bringing him in. Not sure how I feel about that, but then Sam's not been getting much reaction out of his insulin lately, so half a dose probably won't bring him down much anyway. I'm still nervous about it. I can't help but worry, you know? They're supposed to have an excellent monitoring system for animals under anesthesia. I just have to have faith.

Also, dropping Sam's dose down to 1 u is clearly not having the effect I'd hoped so I'll be bumping him back to 1.5 or 1.6 for his PM dose. I really hope getting his teeth cleaned helps him get regulated.

Oh good for Sam. I completely understand about being nervous about it, I was a wreck the day of Harley's dental. Is Sam's appt late in the day? I couldn't feed Harley anything after an early dinner the night before and no insulin the morning of.

A dental can work wonders for their bg's for some then others not so much. It helped Harley alot, then the vet urged us to feed raw to give him as much of an edge as we could to go OTJ (anti jinx), he's flirting with it, sometimes goes 3 weeks without insulin.

I just love Sam's pic, he has such beautiful eyes.

I'm mostly nervous because I lost a cat under anesthesia many years ago. Completely devastated me. Sam's been through a dental before and did fine, so really I just need to have faith. I sure hope he gets some good results from it!

Fingers crossed Harley stays off the J permanently!

Good for you!
Wow--- no wonder you are nervous. But when you think of humans and anesthesia, there is a risk and people do die, but it is extremely rare. I wonder if feline statistics are similar.

Make sure that they do pre-surgery blood work.

NO Covenia (antibiotic) or Metacam (pain med) these are both dangerous drugs that can have deadly side effects for kitties, make sure there is a big note in Sam's chart about it and I would talk to the vet also to make sure they understand. Covenia is a long acting antibiotic injection, two weeks, so it is convenient, but some, not all, some cats have an allergic reaction to it and there is no antidote. The Metacam is hard on the kidneys, so if Sam has any kidney issues it could make it worse. You can do a search on the board, on both of them and read up on them if you have time, there has been alot of discussion on the subject. There are plenty of other drugs to choose from that work just fine.

I hope the dental does the trick for Sam.

Paws crossed Sam comes through the dental with flying colors and lower BG #'s. After losing your other kitty, I don't blame you one bit for being extra nervous. Remember, though, most kitties do just fine. I'll be sending good thoughts to you and Sam May 9.

Good for you Kristen. I know the stress. I was a mess when we took our guys in at the beginning of this month, but it turned out fine. It was all over in a day and they were back to normal in two. Alby the non-sugar cat actually looked worse than Asher after the ordeal. (he’s a big baby)

You will feel so much better when it’s done and you know all is well.
