I Dropped My Cat's Insulin - Now What?

Hi,

When opening the fridge to get my cat's insulin, I grabbed the box and didn't see that it was upside down. The bottle of insulin fell and landed on the hard tile floor. Since it had been shaken, I didn't bother to do the fifteen seconds of gentle rocking that I'd been doing to mix the insulin. Now I wonder if I've permanently separated the insulin molecules in the insulin bottle. Do I need to buy new insulin? Can I use this?

I'm extremely new at this. I only adopted my cat on Thursday and so though we're already totally bonded, I'm still getting the hang of her diabetes shots. Any insight into this situation is appreciated!

Thank you!

First, what insulin are you using. It makes a difference - some are more delicate than others. And some insulins do not need to be gently rocked at all.

Second, are you home testing? If you are, then keep using the insulin. You will be able to tell by how by his/her numbers. Many of us have dropped the insulin, left it out on the counter and it still worked fine.

And if you aren't home testing, please start! It's the only way to really tell how well your insulin is working and if it's safe to give a shot. We can help you learn.

If you are using Humulin N, it's pretty indestructible.

If you are using Lantus or Levemir, they are more delicate -- and shouldn't be rolled or shaken. However, you'll need to see if crystals form in the solution.

We roll ProZinc gently before injecting so it should be okay. As Debby said, you'll be able to tell if it isn't good by the numbers as you hometest.
