I got all these warnings from the vet and on the packaging that if you ever drop a vial of lantus to throw it out. I just dropped a pen catridge of it ( 30$ or so). It looks normal, it didnt break or bubble or anything.
Do I really have to throw it out?

If the vial is intact, and there are no particles floating around inside, I would continue to use it. If there is something wrong with it, you would likely see the BG numbers go up. If your numbers don't worsen, it is likely fine.

I used to store my insulin wrapped in a cloth, inside a container. I only opened the container and handled the vial when I had my hands over a padded surface.

It should be fine. Most people here have dropped a pen or bottle at one point or another and have not noticed any damage to how the insulin works.

You can protect the pen from future accidental drops by wrapping bubble wrap or something else cushiony around it. For a 10 ml bottle of insulin, there are insulin bottle protectors you can buy or you can make one yourself.

No, you don't need to throw it out. Lantus is relatively fragile but it's not nitroglycerin. I would just get tests to make sure Josie's numbers don't get wonky. If they do, you'll know to get new insulin. Likewise, take a close look at it over the next couple of days to make sure there aren't any floating particles. You'll need to look closely and under a light source -- sometimes the floaties will look like clear crystals floating in the solution.

It helps to have a back-up pen so if there's an accident with your insulin, you'll have a spare.

FYI I got my Lantus at The Drugstore - its at the Independent grocers/loblaws chain. It was only like $105 for the five vials. Shoppers and other places were much much more costly.

i got a 5 pack of the little vials for pens for 120$ plus tax or so.

the solution looks normal, there are a few small bubbles in it, but there always is

I've dropped mine twice... I had butter fingers in the beginning I guess. Lesson learned, but my Lantus was OK.
