Ok so my girl is 11 yrs old. Has been diagnosed for 2 yrs now and I was giving her insulin until two months ago.
I stopped because I lost my job abs couldn't afford it anymore. Her bottle ended and in order to get a refill this time my vet was asking for a whole check up since it's been almost a year. I totally understand that, but I can't afford it, plus the Lentas.

Everyday it pains me to see her suffering my her water bowl because she's so thirsty.
Even on the insulin, she was always all over the place. I tried everything, food, curve, testing every hour. Nothing worked.
But now her completely off it, I can just see it in get eyes.

I really don't know what to do. No one will take a diabetic 11 yr old cat, and I will hate up give her up. Then I have family members making me feel bad that I just don't let her go peacefully and euthanize her. But I don't know if I can live with that. I'll feel like I've failed her.

I know euthanizing her may be the best option, but when do I know if it's time?
Have you ever gone through this?

Hello,

I am so sorry to read you are having such a hard time. Have you contacted DCIN about asking for help with the insulin?
If you go the top of this page there is a topic called Financial Aid and Other Resources, maybe look into that and contact DCIN and ask them for a little help.
I sure do hope you can get a little help. Wishing you the best.

She may also just need a different kind of insulin like Prozinc if the Lantus was not working for her. I was just thinking about that when you said her numbers were all over the place. It is a little cheaper than the Lantus.

Not treating the diabetes is cruel - the cat is slowly starving to death and may eventually go into diabetic ketoacidosis and die from that.

You have 2 choices:
1) get some kind of insulin, even if not the greatest and use it
2) put your cat to sleep

If you can do it in your state, pick up some Humulin or Novolin N from the pharmacy.
You do not need a prescription in most US states. Just ask for it.
It isn't the greatest insulin, but it will help.
We have a primer on how to use it.
You will need U-100 syringes.
You will need an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Prime. If you despise WalMart, go to American Diabetes Wholesale and get the Arkray Glucocard 01 or 01 Mini.
You'll need matching test strips and lancets to make a small prick in the ear for get a blood droplet for testing.

Hi there. I can share in your pain honey. Right now my boyfriend and I only have basically one income and struggle to feed ourselves. I didn't know how I was going to afford all of the diabetes supplies and insulin and such. I don't know what insulin you were using but maybe see if you can get BCP PZI. Its like Prozinc but is compounded. I found out that if I get a regular script from my vet and order directly from BCP instead of them ordering it for me I can save like $35 dollars. I think I've seen it can cost $50 including shipping and its a 10mL vial so it lasts awhile. I don't know if any of this is helpful I just know I felt the same way, but for me I couldn't justify putting down my kitty just because of diabetes. If somehow you find a way to get insulin and need syringes, I can send you some. I have a boatload of U100's. If you want to talk more feel free to message me and I'll help you as much as I can.
