Probably not a big deal for many of you, but I successfully (I think) tested Pixie.
I used my husband's Accucheck Nano because I have not invested in a ReliOn yet.
Will this one be pretty accurate?
Pixies reading at 2pm with eating here & there all day (canned tuna and just started Fancy Feast lowest carb) was 299.
Yesterday, at the vets, he was 438. I have noticed a slight change in him just from getting him off the carb loaded food.
He is still pretty tired.

Ok...I think I can do this.
Thanks for all the support so far and I am sure there will be more to come.
Thank you!!

It absolute IS a 'big deal'. Congrats on getting that first test!!! Woohoo!!! :-D

Eliz

(PS. I don't know the Accucheck Nano, but maybe others here do. And most human meters are just fine.)

Good for you!! It is a big deal!! Im so happy for you!!
You can do it and it only gets better!! ;-)

Yeah to Lauri on joining the vampire club.

That first test is the hardest. You did great!

Ok..I feel really bad now. I tested this am (329) and when I pricked the ear the blood came out on the inside
so I must have gone right through the ear.
This is hard and maybe I should go back to using a pen.
The ears are so incredibly thin, how do you not go through?
Ugh...Pixie was more disturbed that I was touching his ears than the whole stick.

I don't think I am going to be able to use treats to distract.
I can do it if he is eating and not moving, but he is not a lap cat and I need to do this
sitting behind him on the floor while he is eating.
Is it ok to start feeding, test, continue feeding and give insulin?
And can treats just be some canned tuna or chicken...all protein, no carbs?
He will not sit still like the nice kittys in the videos!

Plus right now I think he is really hungry and more wiggly.
Feeling bad for him today.

Any way you can get the blood is fine. I go through the ear sometimes too...not a big deal at all unless he exhibits problems later on with a bruise. Not to worry. As for the treats distracting him, I don't give the treat until I get my test done so it is sort of the carrot on the stick for Simon, but ECID. Congrats on testing - it really is a HUGE accomplishment. Just keep doing it any way you can get it. It is so important. Your kitty will get used to it even if they still hate it (at least mine does) and even will come to the test spot when they want a treat. High five on testing!

I've done that, too. And stuck myself, too. It happens. Blot firmly to reduce bleeding.

It may help to slightly angle the lancet, rather than poking straight down.

The accucheck nano is just fine to use. As you have this handy, you don't need to get another meter (unless you want to of course).

When I would pierce Maui's ears I promised her a pretty set of earrings. Well, she didn't get the earrings, instead I got another hole in my ear pierced and wear an earring in her honor! Maui is fine with that idea.....

If the only distraction you can use if feeding him when testing, then go ahead an do that - just feed a teaspoon of food especially if you are testing in between meals, in order to get the test in. The food should not have that immediate an impact on the BG.

The important thing here is to test, no matter what tricks you need to use to do it!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Not yet but just wait! ;-) Those cats in the videos are old pros at being tested. It will get easier.

Any pure protein is fine liked the canned tuna as long as it is in water only. No broth because broth can contains onions or garlic which are toxic to cats. Freeze dried treats are popular. Did we give you this link? low carb healthy treats

You can also use something else your cat loves as a reward. Brushing, play time, ear or chin scritchies. The reward for letting you test does not have to be food.

Don't feel bad. It happens to all of us. I just tested all three of my cats this morning, even the 2 civies (civilians, non-diabetic cats). I ended up poking through the ear of my civie Delta (BG 55) even though I am an old hand at testing. Your cat will be ok.

I poke at like a 45 degree angle. What I do is after the poke, apply a little pressure to the poke spot with a folded over Kleenex to stop the bleeding and minimize any bruising. 20-30 seconds is usually enough for me, or I should say, all my cats will tolerate before they get too squirmy. :o

I think I am going to go to WalMArt today and pick up the ReliOn Prime kit.
Hoping it comes with a pen.
Are the lancets interchangeable? Can I use the lancets I have here now for the SoftTouch Accucheck?
I need to change meters because my husband needs to have his and they download his readings at his dr.'s office.
Can't be sharing with Pixie. Also I think the ReliOn is way cheaper than Accucheck.
It'll be nice to have a backup in case I get a wacky reading.

Pixie is a sweet cat for a few minutes. I usually have to sedate him for vet appointments or to have him groomed.
And I groom here at home.
He is super defensive if he thinks you are poking at him. Starts growling, hissing, biting.

So with that said, I guess anyway I get the blood is ok.
Ok...deep breath...I can do this.

Probably not interchangeable. No reason you can't continue to use the SoftTouch lancing pen.

My Relion Prime meter did NOT come with a lancing pen. The Relion Confirm did.

Prime 0.5 microliter blood drop, test strips 0.18 each, Confirm, 0.3 microliter blood drop, test strips 0.36 each
