Its been a little over a year since my cat Stella was diagnosed. In the beginning I was driving myself crazy testing her and worrying about every single number. She was diagnosed with a thyroid issue and diabetes at the same time and began treatment for both at the same time. It was hard because even at almost 3 of lantis her BG was still sky high.

As unpopular as this might be, I didn't know what to do so I stopped worrying. I stuck to a good maintenance dose (2 units 2x day) and stopped monitoring so closely. I watched her appetite and symptoms of course, but with three children, two of which have special needs, I just didn't have it in me to constantly freak out. Anyway I figured time would tell what would happen with her bg levels. After a while I noticed she was throwing up after her evening shot very frequently, so I stopped. She was getting 2 units in the morning only. Symptomatically she was great, appetite good (wet food only, except when she would sneak the dogs food!) no excessive drinking etc.

Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago. I forgot her insulin... I had sick kids and was sick myself. So I pulled out my testing kit, it had been over 6 months since I'd tested her. And what was the number? 84! So of course I didn't give her more insulin.

It has now been 2 weeks and she is not getting insulin. I have been testing her everyday at random times and the highest her bg has been is 104. What happened? I mean, this is not supposed to happen. What is going on? Is it possible that her BG will spike again? Is she in remission? I am so seriously confused. Happy, but confused.

Well those high numbers on that 3u of Lantus could have been caused by her getting too much insulin, even 2u might have been too much and that she really only needed to have her diet changed. While not the best way to go about it, if she continues to maintain numbers between 40-120 on a human meter for 14 days with most of those in the double digits then Yes she is in remission!!!

While I was determining her dose, we started on 1 unit of lantus and went up slowly with absolutely no change in her high numbers. I was beginning to worry that she was somehow resistant to insulin. THis was also all post diet change.

Forgot that Lantus was a every 12 hours, so she was on a roller coaster with 2 units just in the morning. She probably went near hypo at one point, which may have sensitized her body to insulin. You're lucky you caught her low and stopped; hypoglycemia kills quickly.

Oh, my goodness! You were SO lucky!

Your cat could have easily succumbed to hypoglycemia.... nailbite_smile

If it transpires that your cat IS in remission then do remember that she will always be diabetic. She will just be a 'diet controlled' diabetic, so a low carb diet will continue to be crucially important.

Remission can last for weeks, months or years. We're keeping fingers and paws crossed for you that this remission is permanent!

Well so far so good, small update, but her levels still remain low and symptoms seem gone. We are scheduling our routine vet check/blood work in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully that will be more good news :)
