I cannot afford One Touch anymore

It's just out of the question. I'm become unemployed and am living with my grandparents, and I can't even find work at meijers. I've been getting one touch test strips on amazon, but now I no longer have that option and have to get them at the drug store. I'm thinking that I'll switch to TruTrack, or one of the other less expensive systems, and use the one touch every 3 days or so, just to check to see if the numbers are in the general vicinity I'd expect them to be. This seems to be the only option available for me at the moment. I'd just like to know if any one else uses Trutrack or one of the less expensive systems. I just can't spend 50 dollars on 50 test strips anymore.

I had a TrueTest, same company, not the most accurate readings. The higher the numbers the further off they got from other meters. I use a MaximaAST from Hocks, 50 strips are less than $17. Many people also use Relion Micro from Walmart, about $20 / 50 and more easily available.

If You have to go w/ the TrueTrack or TrueTest (they are different strips) I have a meter and some strips you can have.

I use the Contour meter, and get strips on eBay for ~20 cents each. My Donovan just went OTJ and I have a *lot* of strips stockpiled.... while I am still testing him, it will be less frequently. If I can help, let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into the Relion one... I can't get anything online at the moment, so I'm stuck with whatever I can pick up at the drugstore.

Does anyone know if the Relion Micro is available in Canada? I have not seen it at the Walmart that I regularly go to... but would be willing to drive to another one across town if there's a chance it's available :)

I also use the Walmart Relion meter. When I was unemployed and testing two diabetic cats, the cost of the strips were a lifesaver.

Most store brand meters are made by the same companies that make the named brand meter. You could call Abbott support to find out what other generic brand meters they manufacture that may be available in your area. (888) 522-5226. They make the Relion meters.

i have a whole bunch of the Contour meters so if MJ has extra strips and you want to give that a go i can send you a Contour meter to go with them.

Let me know (my home computer is on the fritz so my time online is only at work at the moment so if you want to do this can you send me a PM as I'll see that right away)

Not available in Canada yet. Only the expensive ones are available here.. annoying to say the least :).

And to michelled: The expensive meters/strips aren't necessarily better.. if you can get a decent meter, there's no reason to go back once in a while with the other meter (can always keep it around as a back up though).. you'll find it's really common around here for people to say to stick with 1 meter or you'll drive yourself crazy. They all have some variance (some more than others), but other then very low readings, which you would treat with food or karo as a precaution anyways, how the numbers compare to each other from test to test is what's most important.

Thank you all for your generous help! I've decided to go with the relion meter. I realized I registered my name wrong, but I was semi freaking out over what I was going to do about daisy and not being able to afford her stuff anymore. I'm so relieved to know other people use meters other than one touch. One touch is great.. but I just can't afford the 100 dollar a month price tag that comes with it right now. One question though, the meter I find at wallmart is the relion ultra... is that the same quality as the micro? I'm assuming it is.

Thank you again for the help.
Michelle and Daisy.

the ultra is fine but it does require a larger drop of blood than the micro and does sip a lot slower. so knowing that just palon with a larger drop of blood and wait til strip is filled

Ok, I checked with my local wallmart, and the micro test strips run cheaper, so I'd like to go with the micro.

Is the micro as accurate as the ultra? I'm just wondering why the test strips are cheaper for that version. Thanks for all the help! you guys are a life saver.

You will like the relion. Hopefully you can do the relion micro (as blood is MUCH smaller) but the regular relion has even less expensive strips and will certainly work fine.
