Hi there. I'm also new here. My baby - Giddy (12-13 years old) was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. I switched her to only wet food. I'm unfortunately not in a position right now to provide insulin injections. The vet says it's not ideal -- but not impossible to maintain her with dietary changes... I need some encouragement to be honest. I feel physically sick over the whole situation. She's not very fond of the wet food he sold me - Purina DM. I've been reading some of your suggestions, and am heading out to get some. Maybe I can mix it with the stuff from the vet? We were back at the vet yesterday because she's constipated and barfed. He said this is probably a bladder infection and gave her a shot of antibiotics, and she'll probably feel better in a couple of days. Any advice anyone can offer will be received so very gratefully.

Cats in the wild do not eat dry food. The dry food is a human invention by the big companies to distribute cat food fairly cheaply.

There is no prescription stuff in the prescription vet foods. I would try to introduce the wet food slowly. Some diabetics can be controlled with diet. Certainly many dry foods have so many carbs, they partially cause diabetes. I would watch Giddy's weight. If she loses weight, then you are not successfully treating the diabetes.

When Leo was diagnosed a couple of years ago, we were devastated. But diabetes is a very well understood disease. And easily treatable. I would say after two weeks of giving injections, I almost felt like a pro. Now it is just routine, and there is no anxiousness from me or Leo. When you are helping your kitteh get healthy, you feel better with the treatment aspects.

That's pretty normal, but as you've seen, it's not necessary anyway. Most of us feed Fancy Feast Classics, Friskies pates or 9-Lives ground.....the good news is you can take it back and get your money back!! All those "prescription" products have a 100% guarantee so you can return it

Do you know what insulin your vet wants to use? If money is the only thing keeping you from starting insulin, please contact me by private message (click on my name and choose "start conversation" and I'll help you get in touch with Diabetic Cats in Need.....We are an organization that helps low income caregivers treat their diabetic cats.

There are less expensive insulin choices. Was he perscribong $300 lantus? You can get it cheaper from Canada. Vetsulin is only $50 pet vial.
