I am new at this all over again-a year later.

I feel like I am starting out new again with Jasper who was diagnosed last November. I probably should have been more active in these forums as well. We recently moved back to the US from Japan and did not realize until after we came back and got a new veterinarian how bad the one in Japan was. Or well, how little they new about diabetes in cats/dogs. There was numerous times were they would ask me what I would like to do for his treatment when his numbers were not going down. The only good thing was that they did not jump on raising his insulin-but they were giving me an insulin that does not do well for cats but does better for dogs (I cannot remember the brand). Flash forward to now-almost two weeks ago we had a scare of DKA for almost a week of treatment but was well enough to come home by the weekend after round the clock of constant fluids, antibiotics, insulin, and potassium. Last week we were giving Jasper 2 units twice a day and than I believe it was the 10th when they wanted us to up to 3 units twice a day. I feel like I am trying to re-understand all of this but my husband has a bit more experience with diabetes when I had none. He felt that 3 units were too high for him and the vet was ok with us going back down to two units so we went back to that and his numbers still were not going down. The 3 units appeared to be too much. So last night we started with the 2.5 units and two hours after his shot his BG dropped greatly and very very slowly has been coming back up-it wasn't until 3PM that he spiked up to 477. We are feeding him a raw diet and since coming back from the vet when he was sick where they spoiled him on canned food he has hardly touched his own. So I am wondering if this is why is numbers dropped so drastically and I figure when his numbers spiked today he had just ate a good portion of his food (thankfully!). I guess I am wondering if I should keep only offering him his raw food or go to the store and buy some canned food so he will eat already. The numbers I saw last night and even into today scared me-but he was acting normal, he was even running around and playing! Also, I suppose I am looking for people to talk to about this, a support group, there is not many people I can talk to here other than my husband. I would like to 'see' other opinions of how I can improve. I have his SS updated in my signature but does not have much information since I learned recently that the monitor I was using was giving me the wrong BG compared to what my vet was getting (by 200 points!).

Very likely that not eating much caused the very low BGs yesterday evening and this morning if he did not eat much yesterday AM and PM.
Since you said he is recovering from DA I would go with low-carb canned that Jasper will eat and then after getting goo consistent BGs transition back to raw.

A human glucometer generally reads lower than a pet meter or veterinary lab equipment. They are not as precise in their number measurement because they are intended to guide management, not duplicate lab tests. Each of the insulin guidelines posted here has criteria using human glucometers for evaluating the test results.

Would you consider switching to a different insulin? Humulin is a harsh, fast-acting insulin that makes the numbers drop fast. It also doesn't usually last a full 12 hours. A more gentle longer lasting insulin like Lantus, Levemir or Prozinc might help his numbers.

The Relion is a good meter, just be sure to use the reference numbers in BJM's signature. 50-130 are good numbers on a human meter. Below 50 is hypo.

Sorry to hear Jasper had DKA recently but glad he's back home, where he belongs! :)

Thank you everyone for your responses! I went and bought some canned food (box of Friskies) but I mix it in with his raw so I can transition back to only raw and he is gobbling it right up!
Granadilla-I re-looked at his paperwork and I had read it wrong, he is actually on Protamine Zinc Insulin, I haven't heard of that one before? I updated his spreadsheet and I am feeling a little clueless if his insulin needs to be upped or lowered or stay where it is a little longer (2.5 units twice daily). There has been a few days where his numbers don't drop until he is due for another shot while others his numbers are good at +6 hours or they are still floating around 300.

Did you also post on PZI thinking you might be using the wrong syringes? If so, let's figure that out first. I answered your post here:

ProZinc/PZI is a good, mild long lasting insulin. Looking at your spreadsheet, the insulin is definitely working. Getting a 49 12 hours after the shot suggests the dose could be too high and could be causing bouncing. We can help you figure out/refine the dose but let's see if you are sure using the right syringes first.
