Hi everyone, been awhile since I posted, I never left, I just did not post much once insulin changed, My Garth was my first sugarboy, and I became the crazy cat lady with him, pzi was the insulin that worked for us, just when I got him regulated he became crf, so protocol changed, I treated the crf first then managed the diabetes. I did get him diet controlled, and we manged both for 10 yrs till cancertook him
I adopted Sonnie 3 yrs ago, and instantly changed his diet, to wet low carb, then a I started seeing the increase in water, aandexcessive peeing, first I though crf, called vet, made an appt. then last night as I was checking my sugar I checked Sonnie, and it was 440!! so to vet confirmed his diabetes , plus he has a abscess behind his eye, I chose prozinc, cuz I knew pzi like a book with Garth, and we did wellon it. so now I am back with Sonnie, any advice would be great!,, I look forward tospending time with all of you, hope to see some familar names.

Welcome back and so sorry about the loss of Garth. Sonnie is a great name. We are relatively new to FDMB although we are regulars here in the ProZinc forum. What we have found (Simon my Sugar Boy and I) is that for us at least, ProZinc seems to drop him fast and then climb back up pretty fast. Not a typical bounce, but more like the insulin just does not last long enough yet. From what I understand, this is typical for ProZinc and that the time lengthens as they get used to it and then the cycles are longer. For example, his nadir was coming at between hour 4 and 5 and now it is between 5 + 6 after a month of being on the insulin.

Hoping to get OTJ but will even take regulated and yellow numbers at pre shot time. That would work too...at least for now.

Look forward to getting to know you!

Welcome back! The forum is not as busy as it used to be - busiest in the early am and pm. If you ever have an emergency, post on Health.

The abcess and infection could be raising his numbers. I like your low starting dose until the infection clears and you get some data.

Don't know if we had spreadsheets when you were here with Garth. They are a great tool for you, your vet and us to keep on top of his numbers. Here are the directions:

what I find with the pzi vet in Garth, is that the first 3 to 4 days it did drop him fast , but then the dose would settle, I did have in him, that it took 7 days for a dose change yo settle, but as we all know ECID, I did this am shoot 1u, his ps was 252. gonna check +2. +4 +6. I work at home so I can test more. but it is possible to go OTJ With this insulin if it is like pzi vet.
no spread sheets where around when Garth was here, I not even sure if my old profile of his is still accessible, you can see how I pushed pzi to the max. one thing I did like with pzi, you could slide scale, especially if an underlying issue came up. then ehen it cleared, the bodyadjusted quickly to original dose.

Hi and welcome, sorry you had to come back.

The differences between PZI and Prozinc are still being debated. Read the sticky at the top of the form, it has alot of the differences discussed in it.

When Prozinc first came out the nadir moved around alot in the beginning, there was alot of talk about a 45 day settling in period, I even put it on my ss to see if there was any difference after 45 days.

ECID so again welcome.

Hi Francine -

I'm Lu-Ann and Grayson is my super-sized, extra-sweet boy. We started out here and pop in from time to time, but due to his Acromegaly, we switched to Lev.

ProZinc can be a good insulin for kitties, just like how you mentioned. From split dosing at +10/+14, to sliding scales, to TID, it really is flexible. I've had to work much harder to keep on track with Lev, but fortunately acro's tend to be very resilient (and resistant!).

What a relieve when you come back 2nd time around. One of my civies just got a preliminarly dx yesterday. We've done the food change already, and will get the urine sample, then start insulin. Not nearly as stressed about it, and he LOVES freeze dried chicken (FDC), so it's like "What pokey? Nom nom nom!"

Welcome back!
