Hi there,
So our baby is on Prozinc. We recently in the past 2-4 months have been checking his sugars at home constantly. He has had good days and bad. We seem to not be able to get him a regulated dose that he used to have before a hypo episode in June. This past week, a whole week almost now, he has been constantly reading anywhere from 250-475 with our meter. He only had 1 episode this past week that was around 120 :smile: :? We called the vet today and she says to give him 2 units Q12 until next Thursday without testing him unless of course he needs it. Then we are bringing him in for a curve. I am curious if this has happened to anyone before. Also this past week, I was away last weekend and he wasn't on his normal schedule. He was getting his shots still of course almost every 12 BID but they were about 30-40 minutes apart Fri, Sat and Sun. Example in the morning he would get shot at 6:15 A.M. Then not until 7:15 P.M. My husband works 12 hour shifts :sad: Moochie is acting normal otherwise. He is playful, sleeps in our bed, eating and drinking normal. Nothing else out of the ordinary just these high readings. Can someone please shed some light on this situation? Thank you confused_cat nailbite_smile
 
I can't help with dosing as I don't use your insulin. But if you are home testing then why pay for a vet curve? They aren't going to do anything you can't do at home. A curve is nothing more than testing every 2 -3 hours. Plus a curve done at home is going to give you truer readings because vet stress won't be influencing the readings.

Also...indicate your meter type in your signature....go to the User Control Panel at top of page.

Did vet say to give insulin "without" testing? :shock: Please ALWAYS test before giving insulin....if you don't test first, you won't know how high/low Moochie is.

Since you home-test...you can do the curve yourself. Numbers will be more accurate because Moochie won't be stressed out by being at the vet's office + it will save you money.

My Rumpelteazer is on ProZinc and her shots are not always exactly 12 hours apart .... due to my goofy work schedule. ProZinc is an in-out type of insulin...you have more flexibility than the depot (Levemir/Lantus) insulins which build up.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood, but do you mean your vet has suggested no blood glucose tests for your cat? He's your baby and it's your choice, but no one here will agree with that advice - 'shooting blind' simply isn't safe. Before I started testing my Toby, he had three serious hypo episodes, and I can't recommend it enough... we really were so close to losing him.

What do you feed to Moochie? Low carb, wet food only is the best thing you can do - it really does drastically reduce BG (you can see an example on Toby's spreadsheet in my signature... Toby's numbers are so much better since he's been eating this way).

Thank you for your replies so quick. We are doing the curve because my husband does the testing and can not do it every 2 hours or so. Moochie goes and hides and ends up hating the world for about 2 days. He actually likes the vet's office :-D The vet didn't say "don't test him" we normally don't because Moochie had such regular readings. We would only test about twice a week. But this past week, my husband has been testing him everyday twice a day and yes he kept a log, of course he isn't home right now but I do know that every morning around 6am he tested and BG was around 300 before shot and food. Then we would have to go to work. Then around 7:30 pm he would test and it would be around 200. Or the past 2 days both readings were in the 400s. With 2 units Q12. We have not changed his food or anything. I thought he had separation anxiety from me because I was only home from 10:30 PM to 10:30 AM for 10 days then last weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday he was alone ALL DAY angry(2)_cat
 
With ProZinc, the most important test times are before each shot (to be sure the dose you are planning to give is safe) and midcycle - between 5 to 7 hours later. You don't need to do a whole lot of curves.

If you could give us a few examples of a few cycles, we might be able to see a pattern. For instance, if he is at 400 at preshot and 120 at midcycle and 400s the next shot time, he is probably bouncing. We expect about a 50% drop from shot to midcycle. If he is dropping steeply at nadir and getting lower numbers than usual, his body panics and releases extra glucose. If you could set up the spreadsheet that Misty gave you the link for, you, the vet and we would be able see his patterns.

Are you giving him a treat he loves after each poke? That's the secret to this thing.

I agree with everyone. I would no more give a shot to my cat blindly than I would my child.
