how to recognize acid stomach and other related questions

Terra is acting this morning like she's really hungry, and she repeatedly goes to her bowl, eats a little of the canned food, then leaves. This goes on over and over again. Sometimes she goes to the water bowl and drinks, sometimes to the little flat of wheat grass. She comes over to me and looks up imploringly, yowls pitifully, and looks with great hopefulness when I open the fridge. Clearly she is hungry but something is preventing her from eating well. I gave her the broth from cooking chicken livers and she drank a lot of that.

To be certain it wasn't finickyness, I opened a new can of another kind of food, and she ate a bit. I changed the bowl (I'm learning all the tricks :? ) and she ate a little more. But overall something is keeping her from eating even though she wants to eat.

Oops, forgot to add that Terra is bouncing this am, with a 543 AMPS. BTW I did just test for ketones and negative.

Someone suggested that they use Pepcid. I got some but am not sure when to give it. Seems to me it's not good to give a stomach acid neutralizer AFTER she's gotten some meat in her stomach. Is my above description possibly a case that called for Pepcid, and if so, when?

Thanks!

Re: how to recognize acid stomach and other related question

I've used Pepcid for both Simba and Gustav, but can't remember how much you should give. I think it was 1/4 of a tablet, and I gave it before they ate. But the real expert on the right amount to give is Larry and Kitties. Hope he sees this and can give you a better answer.

Re: how to recognize acid stomach and other related question

HI Karen, the dosage is a one quarter tablet of pepcid ac. This medication is a acid inhibitor (not a neutralizer) so its designed to work to stop future stomach acid not neutralize whats in there. I was able to give it to Sitka at any time. However later we changed to Omeprazole (prilosec) and if I gave that to Sitka on a empty stomach she would throw up. Jan

Pepcid A/C, NOT Pepcid Complete, 10 mg pill. You can give 1/4 b.i.d. probably an hr. before feeding or you can give 1/2 s.i.d, again an hr. before eating.

Re: how to recognize acid stomach and other related question

The daily max for pepcid is 5mg a day. I did not think the pepcid lasted long enough for SID so I went with 1/4 tab BID. It did help Shadoe a great deal.

Has Terra ever been tested for pancreatitis? The upset stomach, the erratic glucose levels make it look like a possibility to me. Whenever Boo had a flare up of his chronic pancreatitis, we always saw high glucose levels and insulin resistance.

Re: how to recognize acid stomach and other related question

Hmm, I'll check into the pancreatitis possibility. If it's an easy test I could go for that. Also, her blood profile should make some sense to others on here. I'll try and post it with my signature for some feedback. Thanks!

Re: how to recognize acid stomach and other related question

Here is the Texas fPLI tests. It is a blood test and should be in the nromal range of (2.0-6.8) if healthy. I recommend a fasting blood test, because Simba does this test twice a year and he have always eaten before and then we gotten results as 9.9. That result is because of the food digestion being active, but when he had his first severe pancreatitis he had a value of 301, and that is very high and clear pancreatitis.

We also do ultra sound scan of his abdomen and pancrea, on that they can tell whether pancrea looks normally thin thin as it should be or is inflammated.
