How to know if your cat is out of remission

Hi all,

My cat Sparky has been in remission for 2 years. His number are usually in 60-70's. I tested him about 4 days ago and was surprised to find him at 200! :o So I tested him later that day and continued testing and his numbers have been in the range of 138-245. I took him to the vet and he said that unless he steadily climbs he does not need insulin. He checked his teeth and did a physical exam and he seems healthy. He acts normal and has gained 1/2 lb. since last year. There has been no peeing outside the litter box. So what do you think? Any advice is much appreciated. :idea:
 
Well, I think the majority of people here would consider those numbers in a diabetic range. We usually say a cat, off insulin, runs between 40 -120 with the majority of the time in double digits.

Sounds like you have checked out the usual culprits - teeth and infection.

What is he eating?
 
He is eating the low carb Fancy Feast and Friskies. He has stole some dry from my civvie cat but maybe 1/2 teaspoon 3x week. I have stopped any dry in the house since his numbers went up.
 
You might check the food charts to see if you could feed even lower carbs. For instance, if you are at 8%, you might want to try some 3% varieties. (staying away from fish more than once or twice a week) Some cats are really carb sensitive.

And it may take just a dab of insulin to get him back. That is tricky though and you would want to do so with some advice from your specific insulin support group
 
He gets carbs between 3-5%. So he is as low as he can go. He did spend a stressful week with a pet sitter that her a dog here at my house. But that was 2 weeks ago. Would that still be reflected in his blood glucose?
