How to Handle Time Away From Home?

I generally go see my family on the West Coast once a year. It's looking like January is going to be the best time this year.

What do you guys do when you have to leave the house and can't take kitty with you?

I'd suggest contacting your vet's office and see if any of the Vet Techs do pet sitting. If they don't, call around to other vet offices, you'll find one.

I know there is one at my Vet's office that does. I'd be afraid to leave mine with someone that isn't properly trained, medically. The days of paying someone a few bucks to feed/water and clean the LB are long gone once you have a sugarcat, IMHO. The sitter from the vet's charges $30 to come twice a day. Not cheap, but it's safer for my boy to have someone that can do what needs to be done and can recognize if there is a problem. I haven't used her yet and have no idea how much more it will cost me, since I have 2 other cats, but if it is absolutely necessary for me to leave town, I want to know my Lucian is in good hands.

Also, in the past, before having a cat with FD, my vet's office had my credit card number on file, so in case of an emergency they had permission to care for any of my babies, should they become ill while I was away. I used to travel in my job and my son and DIL cared for them, but knew they didn't have to try to contact me if something was wrong.

If you do a search for "How can I find a petsitter", there are lots of sites now that people can join to offer their services. I agree that getting a vet tech that knows your kitty would be best, but if it's not an option, at least you still have time to do some research into people who you think might work out for you.

Some I know of are http://www.care.com, http://www.petsitters.org/, and http://www.petsittersnetwork.com/

Good luck on your search!

I have a pet sitting service in my area called Fetch Pet Care. I have used them ever since my CL has had diabetes. They are in a lot of cities so maybe there will be one in your area. I have had the same sitter from Fetch for 2 years and I have been teaching her everything she needs to know about taking care of a sugar cat. They go above and beyond to take care of your critters. They are not cheap. I pay $40 a day to have her come. But she also takes care of the dog as well for the same price, she dont charge me any extra for the dog and she gets the mail, cleans up after the dog when she takes him out, waters the plants. She will do anything that I ask her to do and best of all she sends me a detailed text message with pictures to tell me everything thats going on with the critters in my absence. I don't have to worry a bit while I'm away. Peace of Mind - Priceless!

I have a pet sitting service who test and give shots. They also feed, clean litter trays, play with the cats, get the mail and emails me updates every visit. Its great!

Thanks for the suggestions. We talked to the vet and they said they would board him for $17.50 a day. Are there any cons to leaving him with the vet that he is seeing?

Are they willing to follow YOUR rules for feeding, testing and shooting? Not all vets are

If you can find someone to come to your home, the blood glucose readings will be more accurate too since being at the vets office is stressful for our kitties..all those strange smells and sounds, new people all the time and living in a cage.

If it's at all possible, I'd try to find someone to come to your home, but if you decide the vet's the best, just make sure they understand the rules you want them to follow

I agree 100%.

I don't think the food or insulin would be an issue, at this point. I'd have to ask about the testing. The stress may or may not be a factor. They are the first ones that he actually stayed with we took him into our care. He is pretty much at home with the people there, oddly enough. We have cats that have been regulars at the vet for years and they still freak. I'm still going to look into a pet sitter. Home is always the best place, me thinks.

I have boarded my diabetic cats at the vet with no issues. However, each time, I write out explicit instructions about testing with my meter, insulin dose including the don't shoot number and diet (no dry food). Fortunately my vet follows my instructions completely.
