It seems he is a little fat now and I know he would be better off if it went the case. Any tips to help a diabetic cat lose weight?

Timed feeders and giving smaller portion sizes can help. CJ lost weight when I stopped leaving food out and gave her smaller meals.

Never let him get too hungry, by feeding mini-meals (freeze part to thaw and be eaten then, or get a timed feeder, if you're not home to do it)
Add a tablespoon of water to the food to provide more volume.
Reduce the fat content of the food by adding 1 ounce plain lean meat or poultry to 5 ounces of cat food and portion out into meals.
Play for a good 15 minutes twice a day.

I put about half of a 13 oz can in the morning then the rest at night. My two cats never seem to finish it though. Which timed feeders are recommended?

Several folks like the Pet Safe 5.

And if they aren't finishing it, start removing a tablespoon and saving it for another time (freeze and you can pull it out when needed).
Gradually reduce the amount of food until what you put down is completely eaten by the next meal.

One of the best things you can do is increase his exercise....Not only does it help burn calories, but it also can make the cells more receptive to the insulin that's there!

What I use with China is "Da Bird"....I can barely touch the wand without every cat in the house coming to play!!

Just make sure your cat doesn't eat Da Bird! I have to keep a watchful eye on CJ with all cat toys. She has swallowed feathers, strings and more.

On a more serious note, here's Dr Pierson's page on feline obesity and safe weight loss from catinfo.org.

I found that being able to weigh Saoirse at home (on a digital baby scales like this one) and also learning how to work out approximate calorie content of food helped me to manage her weight much, much better. A body condition chart is also very helpful in determining when a cat is at ideal weight.

If you follow the guidance from catinfo.org to get Brody back to ideal weight, then weight management becomes easier. Keep a daily note of how much food he eats (e.g no. of oz/cans/pouches) and the approximate calorie content. It may be handy to just add another column to the right hand side of Brody's spreadsheet to keep track of this info. calories he eats If his weight drifts up a little, feed a little less; if downwards, feed a little more.
