How to do .25 iu doses in a u40 syringe?

My cat is on vetsulin and reading the beginners guide to vetsulin it suggests lowering/increasing dosage by .25 iu. My syringes only have 1iu and .5 iu markings so I’m just curious how to measure out .25 iu? Do people just take a guess between the lines?

The guide also suggests using u100 syringes but I’m pretty nervous about drawing too much accidentally, and the conversion confuses me. I think I’ve seen a picture on here before of what 1iu in a u40 syringe looks like in a u100 syringe? I think the visual would be helpful.

Peri has been on 1iu of canninsulin 2x daily for a few months. The last couple days I started getting below 11 for BG pre shot readings so I didn’t shoot for a couple days, she hovered around 7-10. This morning she was just over 11 so I gave her .5 iu instead of her usual 1 iu and her BG +2 hours was 5.8 and +4 was 5.4 so .5 iu may be her sweet spot for now. I’m sorry I don’t have a spreadsheet! Working on it.

However, I’m asking about the syringes because I need to buy more and I don’t know if it would be better to get u100 or u40 especially if she continues on this trend of her insulin dose getting lower? Also maybe this question is better for the vetsulin board?

Thanks in advance :)

I see you don’t have a spreadsheet. I would recommend you set one up as we can then help you.
HERE are the instructions for the SS. If you have trouble we can help you.

Also have you thought about swapping to a longer acting more suitable insulin such as Lantus or Prozinc? Vetsulin is really not the best insulin for cats.

If you are going to buy the u100 syringes to do the conversion you will need the U100 3/10 30 or 31 gauge 6 or 8 mm syringes.

Here is a conversion chart

Hi Mischa. I really like the U100 syringes because it's so much easier to reduce or increase by .25U. Also, as your sugar baby requires less insulin (heading for a remission), it's easier to give micro doses with U100s. That aside, it is possible, with the U40s, to just go between the lines (for .25U), and that's much easier when your syringes show 1/2 units.
It looks like Peri is doing great and you may be needing those U100s as she starts requiring less insulin!
